Anyone hunt with the 45/70? I ordered a CVA Scout break action single shot and plan on using it as my tree stand/woods rifle.
 
Yes. I have two, and killed quite a few deer with them. My favorite platform in a Marlin is the Guide Gun, and I also carry it in the Aspen thickets on the occasions I go to Colorado. I plan on getting a Winchester 1886 soon.

300 grain hollow points seem to work best on deer with broadside lung shots. With 400 grain+ bullets and same placement they run a little further.

Great rifles especially if something bigger is on the list in the future.
 
I bought the traditions single shot 35 Whelan and a 45-70 for my uncle. They both touch holes at 100 yards, I love my encores but these traditions are some sweet single shot rifles
 
During rifle season, I've used a 45/70 (guide gun) exclusively for at least the past ten years. I love the round for the woods or anything inside 200. I don't know how many deer I've killed with it but it's several, I've always had good results and live by the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" rule. I shoot the leverevolution and it's worked well for me.
 
I have killed several deer with single shot 45-70's. I dont like lever actions for a few reasons but most of all is that I cant use just any bullet because of the tube mag. For that reason, I built a 458 win mag Savage bolt gun. I shoot Barnes 300 TTSX and 350 TSX .
 
I'm looking forward to seeing what the recoil will be with the standard pressure Hornady Leverevolution and the magnum pressure Buffalo Bore 300 grain JHP. The rifle will be a 25" barrel CVA Scout with a radial muzzle brake and a weight of 8 lbs. Chuck Hawks has 37 lbs of recoil for a 350 grain magnum load which is equal to a 375 H&H.

I dont want to get kicked out of the tree stand so I'll "test" the Buffalo Bore magnum load but might settle on the Hornady.
 
I've had good accuracy and bullet performance with the cheap Federal blue box Jhp. H&R handi. Deer and Big hogs

I've loaded to 28,000 CUP in my Guide Gun with 405 grain bullets. In a 7 lb rifle, it'll get your attention, but I've had heavy turkey loads in a shotgun beat me up worse.

In my 22 inch barrel Marlin, I've settled on 300 grain JHP Hornadys at trapdoor levels (about 1,800 FPS). That's about all I need for deer. Recoil isn't as bad and expansion is good, and deer don't run as far as using heavier bullets.

The hornady rounds are a perfect fit for that caliber. I get a little sore if I shoot too many from the bench but they arent that bad. I bought a box or 435gr hard cast plus p bear loads before and that gets unpleasant pretty quickly for a 6ft 150 pound guy like myself. If you plan on reloading any of your spent hornady brass just be aware that it is slightly shorter then the standard 45-70 case.
 
Hunting from tree stand sometimes I have to contort into weird positions to get a shot. There might be a time I won't be able to get the butt stock firmly in my shoulder. A hot 45 70 load might hurt like a son of a gun.

There isn't really a light recoiling 45-70 load. The 325ftx over 50gr of Reloder 7 is a good one that is under 30kpsi/CUP. The factory Hornady with the 325ftx has a slightly shorter brass case to allow feeding in lever actions due to the longer tip on the bullet.

The Hornady #4500 300gr hollowpoint works well too with 50gr of Reloder 7.

The Barnes 300 TTSX is some real deer medicine, also with 50gr of Reloder 7.

I use Starline 45-70 brass and highly recommend it. With a single shot, you have all kinds of options.

Just remember that if the buttstock isn't touching your shoulder, the scope soon will be touching your nose/eye.
 
Hodgdon states on their website that H4895 powder can be reduced to as low as 60% of MAX for any load that lists H4895 for shooters wanting lower velocity/power/recoil. I've been experimenting with it some lately using a 395 grain cast bullet (NOE mold) in the 460 Weatherby to come up with a manageable cast bullet deer load.

H4895 is very temp stable too. Always keep the case fill to at least 95% because when shooting downward from a tree stand, the powder falls away from the primer, which can cause hang fires or no fires. A dry wool wad can be added on top of the powder to take up case volume.
