45-70 for deer?

My brother bought a Thompson contender 45-70 with a red dot scope. Was thinking about buying it from him to use as a brush gun next fall. Plus I think it would just be cool to kill a deer with a handgun. What is a good bullet grain to use for deer. I know its a little overkill but where I would be using it I'm only looking at shooting mature bucks anyway not small does or anything. What is your alls opinions and has anyone used a 45-70
 
I've known of people fracturing their wrist with that combo. I woudn't try any hot loads. Heck of a lot of fun to shoot though.

No doubt a limp wrist would make you pay. Better have a double kung fu grip for that bad boy. I'd like to give it a shot or three.

Yeah I shot it once off a rest. Had a two handed grip on it and when the recoil shot up in the air my left hand slipped off. The gun came back down and the trigger gaurd piece that opens it up busted my knuckes up pretty good...lol. It was fun to shoot though. Not planning on doing a ton of shooting with it. Heck, I've only shot at 1 deer in the last two years and that was with a crossbow. So I think I'll be ok, just got to get it sighted in and practice a little. Thanks for all the input guys. looks like I would probably go with the factory loaded 300 grain since I dont reload.
 
Loads for the 45/70 are all over the map. Very interesting cartridge.

Dropped a mule deer in it's tracks several years ago with 405 grain cast bullet. I was using a duplex load of 7 grs. 4227 under 50 grs. 1fg Goex black powder. The rifle was a H&R officer model trapdoor.
