I have a 12 and 20 and recently got a 410. The 12 is a 870 express and gets heavy carrying around while hunting squirrels hills of Lincoln and Moore counties. The 20 is a 1100 LT so weight is no issue but it has about as pretty a wood stock as I have ever seen...so I really don't won't to mess up it's wood. That said I am thinking about trying the 410 on squirrels. It's a Mossberg pump and is very light. My question is will it pack enough punch to consistently bring down a squirrel. Those of you who have used a 410 tell me what you think.
 
Yep. I got a rossi 410 lever action. It's deadly on tree rats. Feed the neighborhood cats real good
 
I started out on squirrels with a little 410/22 over and under. I still have it. Deadly little squirrel gun and would take them out of the tops of trees with #6 shot.

I love a .410, as a kid it seemed all the old timers carried a single shot of some kind, still have my grand pa's, even tho its rusty and skint up it shoots fine, would love to get a clean old Savage or Winchester to hunt with, as far as being a squirrel gitter you have to be a little pickier a taking your shot, needs to be closer and take a better aim.
 
It'll do the job.
Here's an old Savage 94 that I used with 3" #6 shot.
Just one of those days where I needed to stretch my legs and clear my mind. I took the little 410 with ten shells in the cartridge carrier on the stock and went for a walk in the woods behind the house.

Many people do not believe this but it is true:

A 410 ga shotgun will shoot just as far and just as hard as a 28, 20,16, 12, or 10 ga IF you use the same shot size (eg #6) and have the same MZ velocity. The only difference is you have fewer shot in each shell which will put big holes in your pattern.

Which can be somewhat off-set simply by a smaller diameter pattern, i.e. a 25" circle instead of a 30" circle at "x" yardage.
Although a tad better aim is required. :tu:
 
I use my dads 410 that he hunted with in the 50's to kill Marsh Rabbits when he was a kid. Makes me feel like a kid again each time I go out hunting tree rats with that gun. Good times
 
The first gun I got was a .410 when I was 10 years old. I killed my first squirrel with it. They are a lot of fun and yes they are lighter to tote all day. only trouble with them now is the price of the shells.
