I've notice a new trend recently where peeps are putting on 4 vanes instead of 3.

What are the pros and cons to this system?

Is this more of a target or hunting application?

Any advantages to this system with a fixed Broadhead ?

Sounds like more drag and the arrow more likely getting stuck in the deer to me. No idea what the advantages are and in fact I've never heard of 4 vanes.

I'm seeing several TV professional hunters using them as well as a lot of youtube videos on them.

From what I am gathering it seems to be a more western thing. Less wind deflection is what I keep reading about. Hoping to hear from some people that have actually used it.

One more vane to get messed up and one more product I don't need. 3 vanes have done great for years. As far as wind deflection I'd say that ANOTHER vane would be that much more that wind could get a hold of IMO.

It is done to add more steering capability to the arrow. However, the difference it makes is little if any when you take everything into considerationspeed difference, cost factor, grouping factor.

I would just watch this and take into consideration that is with a 3 vane configuration.

Proof is there no doubt :)

Seriously though I just wonder if it's some sort of vanity thing or some new trend that is on the horizon. Everything I have read it looks like it can stabalize fixed Broadheads a bit better if done properly but it takes a rest and riser with good clearance and it does impact the speed ever so slightly. Maybe 2 FPS looking at the data.

If you seen it on tv shows it has to do with making money. Hunting shows on tv any more are gettn pathetic. They shoot the deer and scream and yell like a kid at a birthday party sayn they smoked him then when they recover the deer its stiff, something wrong with that!!!

if I needed to stabilize fixed broadheads then I would have to get my bow tuned because the BHs should fly straight on their own. I guess my bow is fairly well tuned because it punches a bullet hole in paper and shoots fixed broadheads straight. If it didn't, I would get it tuned, not re-fletch all my arrows with a cluster of vanes. Just how I see it though

Trad shooters have been shooting 4 fletch for a long time.its nothing new really its just starting to show up on tv

Tim Gillingham I think shoots 4 fletched arrows with broadheads. Otherwise I haven't seen it but I also don't watch hunting shows often.

I use 4 fletched when using smaller profile vanes. No matter which way I put on string it is the same(comes in handy on wife's arrows).

My bow is deadly accurate with broadheads. So much I am constantly cutting vanes off with my broadheads. Its been paper tuned to the hilt. The problem is that my broadheads shoot about 2 inches left of my fieldpoints.

Yes I could adjust my sight but I have a tool adjustable single pin sight. My plan is next season to switch to a tool less adjustable single pin sight... problem solved right??? Yes It would solve my problem. Couple of clicks over for field points. Couple of clicks back over for broad heads. Problem solved.

Doughboy have you tried movig the rest very slightly to get the broadheads and field points to hit same POI?
bingo!!! if the broadheads and field points are off two inches than your rest needs to move ever so slightly till they come together, i mean a 1/16 at a time

Yes we have messed with it till we are blue in the face. Like I said we are paper tuned like crazy and this bow will shoot bug eyes.

If the bow shoots through paper but doesn't impact the same with field points and broadheads , something is off . It could be tons of stuff hand torque , rest position , spine etc... But if your happy with it and you are more comfortable just moving your sight , then do it .

And by all means stop shooting broadheads at the same dot and cutting vanes off . Hahaha refletching and destroying arrows becomes a real pain in the rear .

Of course Doughboy you could shoot mechanicals. There are some very good ones available these days.

Yeah that is what I am doing this season. Got two packs of Grimreapers But I have about 30 or so Muzzys and Thunder heads laying around. Would like to find a use for them. Would rather use them up than try and trade them off or hassle with selling them.

Yeah I have had to start shooting at a different dot when shooting broadheads. Did not take me long to figure that one out. Can't shoot groups with broad heads.

I have shot 4 fletch arrows for several years. It isn't anything new. My reason for shooting them were to straighten the arrow quicker. I had no problem of getting 3 fletch to tune but through my testing I got better penetration with 4 fletch due to a straighter flying arrow. It also quietened the shot more and I also picked up a few fps due to the arrow being shot straighter.
