360 Buckhammer : Caliber Longevity

I'm looking at getting into another straight walled cartridge rifle for use on white-tail in states where they allow single shot, straight walled cartridge guns. As many of our neighboring states have allowed these, I suspect we will see this allowed in TN sometime in the future too. For the last several years I have not muzzleloader hunted at all...I guess I'm getting a little more preference to low maintenance, reliable shooting as I age.

I've been researching the .360 Buckhammer and on paper velocity, muzzle energy, BC, wind drift etc are all very favorable for white-tail hunting out to 200 yards, with the next closest rival being the .450 Bushmaster. My concern is that this cartridge has been out on the public market for a few years and there are still only a handful of ammunition options available. These are primarily from Remington (the inventor) and Federal, with SP rounds like Core-Lokt and Federal "Blue Box" being the most readily available options.

What do you think?

Is the 360 Buckhammer here to stay or will it go the way of the 6mm Remington?

I have similar concerns about its longevity. I do think the 350 Legend is gonna make it.

I believe the 350 legend is going to make it but I'm not sure about a lot of the others like the 360BH.

The 350/400 legend will take the W on this issue. Both calibers can do anything the BH can do. Lots of available manufacturers (bolt guns and semis) for these calibers as well. There is not a lot to be desired on the 360BH.

If you buy one and then buy a ton of ammo.....then it makes it regardless.

The 360 buckhammer was developed specifically for lever actions. I believe that is the only available action type for which you can buy a rifle in that caliber currently.

Whereas the 350 legend is available in bolt actions, lever actions, and perhaps most importantly MSRs.

This, I believe, is what limit the popularity of the 360 buckhammer more than anything else.

I wondered the same thing last year....I went with the 350 Legend....

And I am not condoning this....but in a video I watched last year a guy was shooting 9MM ammo out of his 350 Legend CVA Scout with pretty good accuracy.....he lost a good bit of velocity due to bullet jump but it seemed to be doable in a pinch....

just get a 350 legend like everyone else and be done with it. It's fine out to 150-200 yards.

I am a 350 Legend fan. I am hoping for a lever action in it though. But that's just my thoughts.

Buy whichever you like and a case or two of ammo and it won't matter.


I have a 350 legend and with an 18" barrel I'm right at 2300fps with 170's, not a nickels difference between it and the 360.

More and more jurisdictions are legalizing straight wall guns or restricting hunting to straight wall guns

Unlike the 6mm Remington, there will always be a market for straight wall cartridges due to legal issues and the choices are far fewer than bottleneck rounds

Straight wall cartridges like the 360 are here to stay

Close range, safer to shoot in developed or flat country
