350 legend input

So, I sold my .44 mag a few weeks ago. I was really wanting a Remington model 7 in .308. But, I've been thinking and reading and that's leads to rabbit holes... I've almost convinced myself on the 350 legend. Hear me out, my 44 was my "woods" gun and the model 7 was to replace it. I have a 700 in 30-06 to use when hunting fields. The 350 legend would be an upgrade to the 44 but definitely not up to a 308. But, my son is 6 and wants to try to hunt next year. He's been shooting his 22 and has shot my dads model 7 in .223 pretty well. I'm just not a fan of the .223 for deer hunting. I'm thinking the 350 legend would be perfect for him and this killing 2 birds with one stone. Obviously I could use it as well. So I was just wondering who out there has experience and feedback on the 350 or point out any flaws in my logic lol.

I'm kind of in the same boat with my son. I think I've decided on a 6.5 Grendel but haven't researched the Legend, maybe that's a better choice. Why are leaning towards the 350 legend?

Well I'm not familiar with the 6.5s at all. One of the guys at work had mentioned the 350 that he got for his son and talked about how much he liked it. So that's where my reading and searching went to. Also, in the off chance that I go North, which is a possibility, I could use the 350.

I have an AR rifle, AR pistol, and a Ruger American Compact. My favorite bullet so far is the Hornady 170 based on testing on hogs. I think it is great for short range woods hunting. I don't typically shoot over 75 yards or so. My 6 year old uses the Ruger compact. I am very interested in loading copper hollow points for this round, I have some 125 Hammer bullets on the way.

I was looking mostly at the Ruger compact. But I really don't like how that magazine sticks out. Right where I would have my hand when carrying it. Is it one of those things you get used to? Or is it annoying as I would think?

Doesn't bother me but I normally am carrying an AR. My 6 year old doesn't really carry it, I carry for him, so I don't have his insight. That's just short walks at night hunting hogs. I was worried about that myself and searched for a flush magazine option but didn't find one.

350 is a straight walled cartridge similar to brush guns . Its very popular and should have a little more range than the 44 magnum you had. Pretty decent up 200 yards with practice , it's kinda similar to the .444 , 45-70 . Just read a little about it ...

Don't know what speeds you're throwing bullets at, but when handloading for my 357 Herrett, I had a lot of luck with the Hornady 170 grn Spire Point Interlock bullets. I was pushing them around 2100 fps.

The .350 is a great choice for out to 200 yards. I bought one last year to be legal during the Ohio gun season. Killed one the first morning with it. I am very impressed with the accuracy, but even more impressed with the lack of recoil. Both my daughters are shooting it and they like it more than their .243. Im shooting Winchester 150grain XPs.

I got into 350 Legend after my hunting buddy got an Axis in that caliber and pulled 3/4" accuracy with a new gun at 100yds on factory 150 gr. ammo. There is good supply of Hornady 170 gr bullets out there right now with lots of Winchester cases. I am using RCBS dies. You need small rifle primers. Powder choices so far include H110 or Lil Gun, CFE Black, and IMR4227. Loaded ammo is scarce as hens teeth. I loaded up the 125 hammer hollow point copper monos but have not had a chance to shoot them yet. My friends Savage Axis is a shooter, I hope my Mossberg Patriot shoots that well.

Recoil on the 150 gr factory loads is about 20% less than a .223 shooting 55gr ammo. Very light with a very low report too. 125 Hammers can get up around 2800 fps according to Quick Load on Lil Gun, so its going to be a very interesting caliber to play with. I expect the 170s to run about 2100 +- fps on Lil Gun too. Quick Load's latest update includes the 150 Legend. I am trying to get some of the Hornady 165 gr. FTX bullets to play with but the arrival date on those has pushed back to April. I think the 180 gr bullets will be good for deer and hogs but they are unobtaineum as well right new.

4227 was a real go-to powder for me for shorter barreled rifles or long-barreled pistols, like the Contender. Seemed to work well with a wide variety of straighter-walled cases.

If I could get my hands on the. 350 I would go with that..223 is just not a big enough round(casing/ power yes) for me if the kids hits shoulder the round might not come outand that's a tiny hole for a blood trail. I hunt with a .270 religiously and blood trails are great everytime. Once I hit shoulder going out and it stopped round from exiting and I still had a nice blood trail. I've been known to track some hard blood trails and that's fine for me but with the kids I want them to have the best chancethey can to retrieve their deer and. 223i feel is just too small. I'm in search of that 350.

I have a buddy that bought a 350 Legend for his 8 year old daughter. The action is short. He takes it when he hunts in blinds. But its a deer killing machine. She killed her first on at a little over 100 yards, and he killed multiple ones with it around the same yardage and in. They love it. I'm gonna be in the market for one for my kids this year.

I don't know a whole lot about the 350 Legend but see that it is gaining popularity in places that now allow a straight walled center fire where it used to only be shotgun/muzzleloader. For a kid and recoil, I would throw 7mm-08 and 6.5 Creedmoor in there as well.

I would like to add a few things for those who may be reading. Feeding issues seem to be common in 350L AR's. One of mine had no issues. The other had issues with a lot of ammo. I ended up doing magazine mods, polishing the bolt face, polishing feed ramps, and going to a polished buffer spring to fix it. This is common with others from what I have read as well. The Hornady 170's are my favorite factory round but they are longer than most other loads in COAL. This was making my feeding issues worse in an AR platform, but thankfully got
It all worked out with the above steps.
another thing, the bullets are .355 (9mm) even though Winchester and Winchester ammo says .357. This can limit you in reloading for rifle bullet choices, though some people are loading .357 or .356, Im personally not comfortable. All this being said, guess what I'm carrying on the hog hunt tomorrow, 350L for sure.

Well I didn't necessarily want a straight walled gun at first. Had my mind set on a Model 7 in 308. But I will also need a gun for my 6 year old (will be 7 next season) and a 45-70 is definitely not going to work for him haha. I had an Encore "pistol" in 45-70 for a few weeks. Talk about an absolute hand cannon! I thought it would be a good mountain gun but shooting it was nearly impossible. So I started thinking more about him than me but the compact 350 will also fit the bill for me needs as well it seems

If you handload then a 45/70 is a GREAT youth gun. 10-12gr Unique under a 300-420gr bullet is super easy on the shoulder.

I have a Marlin 336C in .35 Remington that is at least 40 years old. My father gave it to me when I was 12 and he had had it prior to that. Maybe had 100 rounds shot through it. But that thing puts a thumping on deer. Just can't use it that much since I hunt a shotgun or muzzleloader only area.

Recoil is light in the .35 Remington even with 200 grain bullets. You can even buy a slip on recoil pad. Can consistently shoot.1.5" groups out to 200 yards with the Hornady Leverolution ammo.

I bought the 350 in the Ruger platform and I love it. I bought it to primarily hunt Ohio and I have taken deer for the last two seasons at 175yrds and 205 yards. I shoot the 150 gr. Winchester ammo and it is very accurate. I replaced the factory trigger with a drop in Timney which was a great improvement. I don't like the magazine but have found some are cutting the factory mag down and I plan to do mine. The recoil is non issue for a youngster you couldn't ask for a better set up. Note it is loud and I have the 22 inch barrel.
