For what it is I think the 200 grain corelokt is hard to beat. Big, slow, soft bullet. I have a pre-64 marlin in .35. Not sure, but I've read the hornady leverevolution doesn't like the microgroove barrels so I've never tried it. I think there are some good loads for it because it is a popular round for contender pistol hunters.
 
I use the Hornady LR in my Marlin.. I use it for really thick woods so I zero'd it an inch high at 50yds.

3 shots in basically 1 ragged hole.


Just curious if anyone has bumped up the pressure on one.

The .35 Remington

The .35 Remington cartridge has periodically shown up in a modern bolt action, autoloading, or pump rifle, but its most consistent and popular home has been the excellent Marlin 336 lever action rifle. It is worth noting that in recent years the .35 Rem. has also found a home in single shot hunting pistols.

The factory ballistics for the .35 Rem. look like this: a 150 grain JSP at a muzzle velocity (MV) of 2,300 fps and muzzle energy (ME) of 1,762 ft. lbs.; a 200 grain JSP at a MV of 2,080 fps and a ME of 1,921 ft. lbs. The 200 grain factory bullet is recommended by almost everyone, as a 150 grain .35 bullet has a poor sectional density. It sheds velocity fast and has limited penetration. Accuracy is also reported to be poor with the 150 grain bullet in many rifles.

For the reloader the .358" bullet selection for the .35 Remington includes 180 grain, 200 grain, and 220 grain bullets. I have used all of these. A number of medium burning rifle powders are suitable for the .35 Rem.

Here are some specifications of interest to reloaders: bullet diameter .358", maximum COL 2.525", maximum case length 1.920", trim to 1.910", MAP 35,000 cup.

According to the Speer Reloading Manual Number 13 the 180 grain flatpoint bullet (BC .245, SD .201) can be driven to a muzzle velocity of 1967 fps by 40.0 grains of RL-12 powder, and 2224 fps by a maximum load of 44.0 grains of RL-12. The 180 grain Speer bullet makes an excellent deer load, perhaps the best in the caliber.

The Speer Reloading Manual Number 13 also shows that the 220 grain flatpoint bullet (BC .316, SD .245) can be driven to a MV of 1721 fps with 35.0 grains of RL-12, and 1922 fps with 39.0 grains of RL12. These Speer loads used Winchester cases and CCI 200 primers, and were chronographed from a Marlin 336 rifle with a 20 inch barrel.

The 220 grain Speer bullet offers superior penetration for use on larger game. It is the bullet I would choose if I were to shoot an elk with a .35 Rem. rifle. At 100 yards it strikes with about 1,368 ft. lbs. of energy.

Possibly the most outstanding whitetail load for the .35 Remington, one that rivals the .300 Savage in performance is the Speer 180 grain flatnose bullet pushed to 2300 fps by H335 or Bl-C(2). For black bear and boar, the 200 grain roundnose bullets available from Remington, Sierra, and Hornady and the 220 grain flatnose bullet made by Speer are excellent choices.

You put the terms "deer rifle" and "levergun" in the same sentence and most folks will immediately think of the Winchester 94 in .30-30. Sure, there will be some Savage fans shouting about their pet Model 99s in .250 or .300 Savage, and with good reason; and there will be some folks ballyhooing their light, short-action .44 Magnums; and let's not overlook those nostalgic souls who speak so lovingly of their .348s, but the bottom-line is that most folks still think of the .30-30 Winchester as America's levergun. Then there's that "other levergun", the one that folks don't talk much about; an awkward, almost judgmental, knowing silence, similar to that heard in years gone by when a young single woman had to leave town because she was "in a family way". You know, we just don't talk about "that one". Well, there's nothing shameful about the .35 Remington, and while the popular gun press doesn't generally say much about the cartridge or the rifle, Marlin has been making, and steadily selling, them for over half a century now. Let's pull the curtain back and take a closer look at the "other levergun".

"Pre-64 Marlin"?? Marlins from the 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's are basically the same except for MicroGroove rifling introduced in '53. Winchester made the big changes after '64 so it's common to distinguish those by "pre-64 Winchester" but why Marlins? Just never seen anybody use that term with anything other than Winchesters.

I bought a 35 marlin in 1970 new, cost 87 dollars out the door.
I have reloaded for it ever since, never had any reason to reload over book. Still works good today.

I have shot many deer and hogs with it with no problem. I can
not remember exactly what I used for reloading as I do not have my records wigh me at present.

I also have a contender in 35 remington.
 
Been awhile since I loaded for the 35 Rem nor do I have my notes in front of me at present.

IMR 4064 & 3031 were what I used alot of in it have used some H-414 with some decent results,have them and some other test loads loaded for it but haven't taken it or them to the range as yet.Of those are some loaded with H 335 and Speer 180gr FP's that isn't no longer listed either by speer or hodgdons.Ramshot Tac looks to be a good choice as well.

See no need yet to load the Hornady FTX as the factory loads although shoot very well in my 336 they aren't much better to me than the Speer 180gr handloads I've used in the past and come in under them in FPS deptment in the factory loads I have shot,still have a good stock of them as well.Still would be the better choice of 200gr pills though.

Used to shoot a lot of cast and pistol bullets in it years ago have just about forgot how munch FUN they were.

THERE were MANY CHANGES in the firearms manufacturing tecniqcueks made in the 1960s , most were done to cut cost and improve proffit for the investors because there were few compititors during the 1950s 1960s as the war destroyed most other countries armes industry. America being portected by the oceans and distance from the old world did not suffer much damage to our infrastructure from bombs and shelling . The changes were not the best for the qulity of the rifles and did not help the hunter.
The 1964 time line is a good point to use as a comparison for these changes from checkering to pressed checkering and other changes to most rifles ect.

In the mid-1950's Marlin incorporated its proprietary Micro-Groove rifling system into the Model 336. Microgroove rifling with many shallow grooves was designed to work better with jacketed bullets than more traditional rifling with fewer but deeper grooves originally developed for use with lead bullets

The 336 is credited as number two in all-time leader in U.S. high-powered rifle sales, after the Winchester Model 1894.[1]

Designed for factory loaded ammunition, Microgroove barrels have a reputation for accuracy problems with centerfire ammunition handloaded with cast lead bullets due to the increased bore diameter generated by the shallow grooves. Use of oversized cast bullets has great effect on solving this problem, restoring accuracy with cast bullet handloads to levels seen from Ballard Rifled barrels.[4] Early Marlin .30-30 microgroove barrels had a twist rate of 1 turn in 10 inches optimized for factory ammunition with jacketed bullets; later Marlin .30-30 microgroove barrels show a twist rate of 1 turn in 10.5 inches which improves accuracy with cartridges loaded to lower velocity than standard.

The story is told that the auction of the old Marlin Firearms operation in 1924 was attended by several curious children, a small dog and a lawyer named Frank Kenna. Kenna bid $100 and the properties were his � along with a $100,000 mortgage. The Marlin Firearms Company has been owned and run by the Kennas ever since, and has seen constant change and improvements. Kenna re-introduced several of the models famous before World War I, and in 1936 established the Marlin razor blade business. His eldest son, Roger Kenna, assumed the presidency in 1947 and Marlin enjoyed steady growth until his death in 1959. When his brother, Frank Kenna, Jr. took over as President, razor blade production was gradually phased out to focus attention on sporting firearms. Frank Kenna, Jr. became Chairman in 1995, and Roger�s son, Stephen Kenna, formerly Vice President of Operations and General Counsel, became President. In 1997 he left to pursue other interests. Robert Behn assumed the presidency in May 1997 and continues in that role today. Upon Frank Kenna, Jr.�s retirement in 1999, his son, Frank Kenna, III, became Chairman.

Early history
John M. Marlin was born in Connecticut in 1836, and served his apprenticeship as a tool and die maker. During the Civil War, he worked at the Colt plant in Hartford, and in 1870 hung out his sign on State Street, New Haven, to start manufacturing his own line of revolvers and deringers. The outstanding team of inventors he was able to attract developed breakthrough and enduring models, such as Models 1891 and 1893. Today known as Models 39 and 336 respectively, they are the oldest shoulder arm designs in the world still being produced. The lever action 22 repeater (now Model 39) even became the favorite of many exhibition shooters, including Annie Oakley. When John Marlin died in 1901, his two sons took over the business and began a diversification program. In 1915, during World War I, a New York syndicate bought the company and renamed it the Marlin Rockwell Corporation. Marlin became one of the largest machine gun producers in the world for the US and its Allies, building the M1895 Colt-Browning machine gun and a later variant called the "Marlin gun". After the War, the sporting firearms part of the business became a new corporation, which staggered until 1923, when it went on the auction block.


Marlin Firearms labored for a century as an underdog levergun maker to Winchester (also of New Haven). However, in the 1980s and 1990s, Marlin finally began to outpace its old rival. It is currently the dominant seller of lever action rifles in North America. Its use of side ejection allows for flat-topped firearms, thereby making the mounting of scopes far easier than for traditional Winchesters. This helped Marlin capture more market share as American shooters came to rely more and more on optics. Marlins are also larger and stronger than most of the Winchester line, allowing them to use higher powered cartridges such as the .45-70. Marlin's model 1894 lever-action rifles and carbines are available in handgun calibers, including .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum, and .41 Magnum, making them suitable companion long guns for revolvers in those calibers.

Company expansion
In November 2000, Marlin purchased the assets of H&R 1871, Inc., a Massachusetts-based manufacturer of shotguns and rifles (New England Firearms branded), founded in 1871, and now located in Gardner, Massachusetts. Today H&R 1871 employs over 200 people. Marketing its products under the brand names of Harrington & Richardson and New England Firearms, H&R 1871 is the largest manufacturer of single shot shotguns and rifles in the world.[citation needed]

In December 2007 Remington Arms Company purchased Marlin.[5]

Remington announced in April 2008 that it would close the Gardner manufacturing plant by the end of 2008 effecting 200 workers.[6]. There remains a manufacturing facility at North Haven, Connecticut.[7].

In March 2010, Marlin announced that it would close its North Haven plant, and move the work out of state

The Marlin Model 336 is a lever-action rifle made by Marlin Firearms. It is most often chambered in .30-30 Winchester and .35 Remington, though it has also been chambered in several other cartridges over the years, and is considered to be a woods rifle suited for taking medium game within 150 yards (137m).
History
The rifle's precursor was the Model 36, introduced in 1936, which traces its development to the Marlin Model of 1893. The Model 36 was heavier than the Winchester 94, which was then the dominant lever action hunting rifle. It also featured a semi pistol grip wooden stock (whereas at that time most of Winchesters were straight stocks), solid top receiver, and side-ejection, in contrast to the 94's top-ejection. The 36 was updated into the 336 in 1948, continuing the main differences with the Winchester.

While most production variants of the 336 feature pistol grip stock, 20 inch barrel and full length tube magazine, other styles have been frequently offered by Marlin; for instance, a limited production of 1,000 336 "D" variants with a ported 18-inch barrel, 35 cal., each accompanied with a certification letter from the CEO of Marlin was made circa 2000.


Models
Youth Models:
Marlin has made "youth" versions of the 336 at times, such as the 336Y, that are considerably shorter and lighter than the basic model.
OEM Branded Models:
Marlin has also made a number of these lever-action rifles for mass marketers like Sears, Western Auto, K-Mart and Wal-Mart. These models have walnut-stained hardwood stocks (as opposed to American Walnut stocks) and were sold for significantly lower prices than standard Model 336's. Mechanically identical to the Model 336, these rifles were sold under the names Glenfield, Glenfield Marlin or Marlin as Models 30, 30A, 30AS and 30AW. The Model 30AW package includes a gold-plated steel trigger, 3-9x32 factory-mounted scope, padded sling and offset hammer spur. It is identical to the current Marlin Model 336W.

XLR Series:
Marlin also offers an XLR line in both 336 and 1895 size actions. The XLR designation indicates a grey and black laminate stock with a pistol grip as opposed to the traditional straight grip. The XLR models are also stainless steel with a non-gloss satin finish as opposed to the traditional blued finish.

Model 1894
The current Marlin Model 1894 is a short action version of the Model 336 which externally resembles the original Model of 1894 which was internally different. It is chambered in rimmed calibers commonly associated with revolvers such as the .38 Special/.357 Magnum, the .44 Special/.44 Magnum, and the .45 Colt. This model is popular with cowboy action shooting enthusiasts, and is also popular on ranches and in rural areas where a lever gun and revolver in the same caliber is traditional.

Model 1895
Introduced in 1972 and named in honor of the Marlin Model of 1895 (produced from 1895-1917), the current Model 1895 rifle is based on the final design of the 336 but enlarged and strengthened for more powerful, big bore cartridges. It was initially chambered in the traditional .45-70 then in the .444 Marlin developed specificly for the new Model 1895.

Marlin 336 Year of Manufacture
The following table can be used to date the year of manufacture of a Marlin 336. It is also valid for determining most other Marlin firearm build dates from 1946 to the present.

Starting in 1973, the year of manufacture can be determined by subtracting the first two digits of the serial number from 100: Example: SN 2512345 would have been made in 1975 [100 - 25 = 75].
