Anything .338 is expensive to shoot. I was sorely tempted to pick up a .338Lapau Magnum earlier this year but the thought of $5.00 plus a shot for plinking ammo sent me back to the 300WSM.
Thing about the big calibers is that unless you are really shooting way out there- and I define "way out there" as 1000yards and further- then there are better rounds. In a well setup rifle with good DOPE and decent shooter a .308 is effective out to 800 yards, and can be accurate out to 1000yds, the newer 300 WSM is effective out to 1000yards plus. My 168gr SMK handloads at 1000 yards hits at 1400fps and over 800ftlbs of energy, and the 208gr SMK's hit at over 1500fps and over 1100lbft of energy, which is plenty enough to put most things down. The nice thing is the .30 cal stuff is financially reasonable, while the .338 stuff just isnt to me.
So the question is how often will you need that kind of range? And is it worht the cost?
 
You don't need a .338 WM for 300 yards or less. Check out the.338-06. Since your a savage nut, easy to change from .30-06. A lot of people using the .338-06.
 
Ah I dont really want one it was just a thought, while in the stand today. And if I ever get another rifle its either going to be a Savage 16 or 14 AC or ruger m77 Hawkeye laminate in 270 wsm or 7mm wsm or 7mm-08 dunno which
 
If I were buying a dedicated elk rifle, the .338 would be my 1st choice. If you hand load you could download it some and use it on deer no problem. If you only had the money for 1 rifle to hunt big game with, the 338 is hard to beat.

Yeah, I don't believe in "overkill" unless you mean recoil or the cost of ammo. The .338 would make the perfect all-purpose big game rifle if you reload. The recoil really isn't too bad on them if you have a good fitting gun.

I feed mine 67 grains of IMR 4350 behind a 225 gr Sierra Game king. It will shoot 1 inch groups at 200 yards. I have never had to track one over 25 yards.

I get good expansion with that load. I have to be careful to shoot behind the shoulder so that I don't ruin them.
 
I shot deer from 90-240 yards with a 338 . Really wasn't anymore damage than my 3006. But I can tell y'all . I haven't had to track a deer more than 3 steps lol
 
I can load my 338 Lapua with 300 Bergers for less than 1.50 a round,,it is bad news at 1,000 and out,,I been looking into a 375 also,,

inside 300 yards I dont think there is any difference in any factory loaded caliber,,
 
I would be hand loading myself and I'm tlreally thinking more into this caliber, I can get brass reasonable ($37 for 50 PCs) so I'm thinking about it hard now. I wouldn't mind setting up this gun for a longer range weapon but I dunno
