who has shot deer with one and does it do alot of damage? See, I was planning on using a 300 mag for cutovers and sighted my 338 in today I love everything about it with the recoil and muzzle rise. Im using 200 grain bullets. Thanks for any info
 
I bought that 338 for elk next year. but i sighted it in today and like shooting that 338 more than the 300.

With the right controlled expansion bullet, it won't make anymore of a mess than anything else. It does put out a lot more force on the butt end though.

I can't really tell much difference with that 338 than my 3006 With the recoil
 
I have killed dozens of deer with a 338wm over the years.... Always used Barnes TSX bullets and never lost oa deer or had lots of damaged meat... I would not use Blastics tips on one but hey... partions, TSX, etc... good to go.

Load some TSX's up over the max load of od RL-19....

Guess it depends on several things: load, bullet weight, recoil pad, total weight of rifle/scope, etc.

Shoot them at near the same weight with same pad, stock and such and there is a sizable difference. Now if it has a break on it, thats a different story. I just can't shoot breaks, they are too dang loud.
 
I have some 300 Accubonds loaded over 89 grs Retumbo in the 338 Lapua,,I am gonna see how it does.

I shot a groundhog with the 300 Scenar at 540 yards last spring and it didnt look any worse than anything else,,but I bet you on elk size game at any distance the 338 would really put the 300`s to shame,,
 
That's what I originally bought the 338 for elk . But I fell in love shooting it lol. I have a 300 win mag even with a recoil pad after the 4th shot it feels like it break your shoulder.
 
My personal exprience says if you get an elk within range you want him down, now. They can cover an enormous distance very fast. I shot one with an -06 150 partition that ran 1/4 mile over two small hills into another hunter who put him down with a 7Mag. Took a GW to settle that dispute and I lost. The 338 may sound like too much gun but an elk at 300 yards may be the only shot you get and you better have some muscle at your command.

you defiantly need muscle for elk . Even deer I had a problem with 150 grain 06 last year . Made well place shots on 2 8pts. One went 350 yards and the other one I had to shoot twice and a hour and half later he finally died
 
I have killed several deer with my .338 Win. Mag. There is never any more damage than I have experienced with my 30-06. I shoot a 215 grain Sierra Game King bullet in front of 69 gr of IMR 4350. This load in my gun is a tack driver.
