For those of you that use a 308, what ammo have yall been using? I've been using Hornady American Whitetail 150 grain.

When I carry my Savage 99 in .308 it's with handloads using 150 grain Sierra bullets. In .308 I think about any 150 grain bullet is perfect for deer.

The Hornady AM are interlock so I'm sure they have similar results.

Plan on using the rest of this box and seeing the results and may try out the Hornady GMX in 165 grain or Winchester Super X in 150 grain.

Handloads in my .308. 150 grain Sierra Pro Hunter (flat base), 43.2 grains of IMR30301. 2,700 ft/s.

Do you have good results with that? Just seems like too light. I know accuracy would be good but seems like it might pass through before much expansion. Do you hunt open fields?

I've yet to kill with them. A guy I work with uses 130 gr hollow points in a 30-06 so I think I would be fine using spitzers. I generally hunt hardwoods but if I kill I'll let you know. You were right on accuracy. Way under an inch with w748

I have always liked 165 gr standard cup-n-core bullets out of my 308s. My personal favorite is the discontinued Nosler Solid Base.

For a while, I shot Nosler partitons. Accuracy was under an inch at 100-yards and they did the job. But I quit messing with handloads when I quit worrying about 6/8 of an inch versus an inch. My rifle shoots far better than I do. The 150-gr. silver tips knock them on their butt and leave a great blood trail.

30-06 is a different animal though. I don't think I'd trust the 125 grain. Probably great for practicing or competition shooting where accuracy is needed but I don't know of it would have enough weight to have the power of a 150 or 180 grain bullet. I hunt in hardwoods too and I use 150 grain now which seems to work but I was just seeing if anyone was using 180 grain bullets and the results they were getting. But it seems like everyone is using 150 or 165 grain.

I'm pushing this bullet close to 3100fps. My only concern is it fragmenting. And I'm not concerned. With a different bullet choice my opinion would be different but it has more than enough power to kill farther than I'm capable of shooting.

180 grain Nosler Partitions handloads. I'm getting 2, 440 fps out of a 20" barrel and half MOA at 100 yds. Your rate of twist can make a difference. 1:12 is suitable for 150 grain and lighter. 1:10 is more for 165 grain and heavier. I havent shot anything with this load yet, but I'm sure it'll be lights out.

I would think a 125 grain would be screaming and full expansion would occur before/if the bullet passed thru. Especially it having a lead nose.

Yea I liked the results too on my buck. Could barely see entrance hole but exit whole was the size of a golf ball or larger.

Yes I agree that it would reach farther. And be much more accurate than the 150 to 180 grain bullets. When I said power previously I meant knock down power. I would just be concerned that at short distances of hardwood hunting that with the power the 308 produces that the 125 might pass through without mushrooming all the way if any.

It's not the size of the bullet. It's bulletin placement and what the bullet was designed to do. I've got more than enough knockdown past my capabilities. Using a vmax or amax I would be concerned. But not with this one. As far as reaching farther. I would go to a 165 if I was field hunting and wouldn't go any higher than that.
