Thinking about selling my Remington Model 7 .260 and buying a 300wsm. Anyone here have a Ruger M77 in 300wsm? How does it shoot? Recoil? What type of Ammo. Thanks

I have had 3 .300wsm's a Savage,a Weatherby and a Ruger. The Ruger was the worst as far as recoil went even with a Sims recoil pad. The best as far as recoil went was the Weatherby,the best accuracy wise was the Savage.

I have 2 300 WSM's. The recoil isn't bad at all. IMO, pretty much the same as a 30-06. Both of mine are Model 70's. Accuracy is sub-MOA. I'm not sure about the Ruger.

I agree. Mine is a Browning Stainless Stalker and if I could only have 1 rifle, that would be the one! I absolutely love the rifle and the caliber - buy one.

i honestly dont think the 300wsm is as versatle a a 300wm,100fps more is what i see posted & bullets over 180g have trouble loading,i seen federal has some 130g for the 300wm & meant to look & see what kind of balistics were for the wsm if they made any for it,they were 3500fps oor so,mike243

I think it depends on what point of view you want to take. IMO, I think the WSM is more versatile in many ways. It's easier, more simple and cheaper to reload for. It burns less powder because of the short and fat column and achieves similiar ballistics to the Win Mag with less recoil due to less mass from gas from the powder. The rifle is lighter because the rifle is short action making it ideal for those long hikes. Most Win Mags have 26" barrels and WSM's have 22 to 24" barrels. I think the only advantage the Win Mag has is case capacity for the 200 grain bullets.

If you compare the factory ballistics for the Federal 165 grain Nosler Partition you will see a pretty big difference. If you reload, these figures are meaningless as you can easily load the Win Mag to achieve greater velocities.

I like the 300 WSM and argree on the recoil isn't bad at all at least with those I have shot.

As for the Ruger in it good luck finding one.

I sold a Winchester Model 70 .300WSM that had a synthetic stock and stainless steel barrel. It kicked a tad bit more than my model 70 30-06 but not much more. If my parents had not bought me the 06 twenty years ago I would have sold it and kept the WSM.

I have a Savage and the balistics are impressive. The recoil (to me) is between a 7mm mag and a 30-06. I got the 180 gr powerpoint and 150 nostler silver tips. Hit a big bodied 6 pt and dropped it in it's tracks with no exit wound. The shot was a diagonal from front to rear and every bit of the 3000 fps and 3000 ft/lbs of energy did the trick.
Some say that they want to see a through and through shot with out exception, otherwise they aren't going to say anything good about that round.

The 300wsm will take anything in North America and is very versital. Try reloading to reduce the cost of shells.
It may be a bit too much for some but you have to try 2 or 3 different loads and see which will shoot close enough to utilize a heavy round for big game and heavy brush and a lighter round for distance or smaller game.

I also have a Savage 300WSM and it shoots submoa with winchester 150 ballistic tips. I used to have a 7mm mag. They both kick about the same to me. A SIMS recoil pad helped alot.

If your looking for factory loads might try Gander Mtn. Yeah there overpriced but they do have a better selection.

my winchester mod 70 dosent kick too bad with 150g with hornaday light mags.im sure the whop factor would go up with 180-220g,i dont see that heavy a bullet is needed for whitetails in Tn.im going to get some 130g & see if my rifle likes them,mike243

I can barely tell the difference between my 270 Win and my 300 WSM. The 300 is louder and kicks just a tad more and that's about it.
