I have a newer Henry 30-30 and I can't get any consistency out of the Hornady LeveRevolution rounds in 160 grain. I'm looking for an accurate bullet out to 150-200 max with knockdown power. This is my timber gun. Any suggestions?

I would probably try 150 gr ammo first, negligible difference in effective knockdown energy, but it won't matter if you don't have the accuracy.
 
only way IMO to achieve accuracy and great killing power out to 200 with a 30/30

single shot rifle ( i have killed to 279 several 150-200)
125 nbt over max varget seated to lands

in the lever action

id load the same
you would have a 2 shot rifle one in chamber one in tube
cant load pointed bullets in tube mag (unless flex tip lever revolution)

125 nbt loaded to spec

best accuracy in factory ammo i got was winchester 170 gn rn
or loaded 170 hornady rn

I reload a Hornady 170 gr FP at 2300 fps, very accurate out for my dad's Marlin 336 (less than 1" at 100 yds) and is only 8.5" low at 200 if 100 zero but energy will fall below 1000 ft-lb at around 175 yds. If it is a "timber gun" why need 200 yds, that is along ways in the timber unless shooting down some type of fire break, powerline etc?
 
Nothing wrong with a two-round rifle, I own several of them.

If your first round kills Mr Deer DRT no one I know takes aim and pumps a magazine full into the dead deer.

If you shoot and miss most of the time Mr. Deer is hauling buggy for the next county, there ain't a second shot.
 
My marlin likes 150 power points. I've killed out to 150 yds with them.

When I hunted with a .30-30, I handloaded 150 gr. Speer flat points. They worked pretty good. But, like the other guys said a lot of ammo will work good in the woods.
 
Thanks guys. I should have specified that handloading isn't an option for me. I'm going to try 170 gr corelokts next and see how they shoot.

If they don't work for you let me know and I will give you a couple reloads to shoot, if they work out we can get together and get you some ready before next season. I live in Newport so it is not that far of a drive.
 
A guy I used to work with liked the Sierra 125 gr. hp's. Said they expanded good and knocked some good sized holes. I used to load Hornady 110 gr. Spire Points to about 2750 in a Savage 340 I used to have.

My brother used to use Rem 170 gr. Core-Locks. Worked good for him.

The good old 30/30 has long been my favorite for woods hunting. I handload, but keep quite a bit of factory ammo on hand as well. To be honest, ammo from Remington, Winchester, and Federal is quite good. I'd recommend buying a box of 150's and 170's from one maker and see which shoots best in your rifle.

The 150's seem to fly a faster and flatter than the 170's, but the difference is negligible. I usually get complete pass through penetration with either.

I shot this one last week with my Dad's 30-30 and my reloads, not a giant but good for around here. My mom bought it for him in 1974 and I wouldn't take $20,000 for it, she is gone and Dad is in his 70s so to much history!

I feel pretty good about the 170 gr corelokts. In hindsight, I think my barrel was heating up too much and affecting the accuracy.

Great, glad you found something you could live with. I think the 170 gr. is the way to go for the 30-30 under normal circumstances.

Me too. They shoot very consistently in my gun. I also tried the Leverlutions when I first got my gun, and they were all over the place for me as well - I'm talking ten or twelve inches apart at maybe 70 yards.
