.30 06 a 300 yard Gun??

Has anybody had much luck shooting past 250 yards with a .30 06? I typically think of the .270 for long ranges but just wanted to see if anybody has any feedback.

Nope...I'm not that good lol! I would say 300 yards is my absolute max in benign conditions and plenty of visibility.

Any cartridge based off of the .308 and 30-06 are plenty capable to 300+ yards.

Let me tell you a story about the 30/06. My Grand Daddy was in World War II toting a M1 Garand across France and Germany. One day he and another guy were on guard duty over looking a huge open field. He and the other guy were watching a huge Jack Rabbit about 400 yards away. My Grand Daddy bet the other guy that he could hit that rabbit with the M1 Garand. My Grand Dad took careful aim and squeezed off a round,,,that rabbit jumped 2ft off the ground and fell deader than 12 noon. He asked the other guy if he wanted to go over and check the rabbit,,he just paid him and laughed. God Bless my Grand Dad and all other Vets.

Great story!! I was blessed to actually get to shoot a M1 Garand this weekend. It is a pleasure to shoot. The gun is heavy so much of the recoil is absorbed. Just looking at the rifle I went back in time. My favorite part was the loud "ping" when the last round was fired. It is no joke, that thing really makes a loud ping when it is ejected!

300 is very doable with my 243 with some good shells,

nosler bullet no problem with .243, I dropped one stone cold dead at 550 yards with a .243

Yes Sir,got my 30-06 sighted in dead on at 100yds, hits about 2.5inches low at 200 and about 6 inches low at 300yds

Totally agree with this!!!!!

I dropped a deer at 275 with a 270. I would have absolutely no problem shooting mine at 300.

for somebody that practices at those ranges, it may be a cake walk but for somebody who has never shot over 100 yds., it's not. i have not been doing much shooting over 100 yds myself the last few years and am not sure i would be comfortable at 300 yds.
but as far as the 30-06, it is very capable of shooting as far as a good marksman can shoot it.

really loud. the germans would hear that sound and knew the g.i.'s were out of ammo. so the g.i.s carried extra clips and they would drop them to make the ping sound and then german would think they were out of ammo but they werent. good trick

one of the best. a huge myth is that super flat calibers and mega magnums are your best long range guns. in truth your best long range calibers are calibers that are inherently accurate and have a twist that can shoot a bullet that has a high ballistic coefficency and sectional density. a 308 is a perfect example. heavy bullets are also better becuase they buck the wind better and retain downrange velocity better. afterall, bullet drop is teh easiest factor to compensate for.

good thing about the 06 is u can go from 220 grain bullet down to a tiny bullet
