It truley wasnt what i expected. I had a great hunt yeaterday in the heat! I have a spot that is tucked away deep into the woods. It is a pond where 3 ridges come down.
I got off at 5 and by time i got changed and in the stand, it was 530. Before i could even get my bow pulled up all the way, i had 6 does come in. This being the 1st time in the spot, i chose to pass bc it was so early. They went strait to the water and started drinking.
So i was trying to get mask and jacket on and here comes out the middle of nowhere a nice 8pt crashing thru the water and runs the does off. Evertime they would get close he would run them off. Then 2 more does came and he ran those off.
The whole time he has been around 45 to 50 yards. Im 25 feet up and on the side of a steep hill. The range finder kept saying 45, but dang at that angle it seemed alot further. Finally he stop at 41 yards and i decided to take the shot, i aimed a touch below his heart bc of the angle. Well i shot low and took off belly hair! Dang, i was upset! He blew and ran off and scare all the deer off.
I decided to grab my grunt call and make a couple soft doe grunts. 60 secs later i see 3 does and a small 6 point come down on my right side at 20 yards and race each other to the water. Then here comes 4 more does from the left dowm to the water. Then 2 more small bucks came in from behind me. I was like dang! I guess i picked the right spot. My tracer nock was blinking and every deer went over and investigated it!
That was 18 deer so far i seen. I was just waiting on big boy to come back or one bigger. The deer drink and the fed off. Its getting close to dark and i here foot steps coming. 3 deer came to the pond. I couldnt see any horns.
One of them started to go to the blinking arrow and see what it was and since it was so close to dark, i decided to shoot. Again at 40 yards. I drew back and could really see my pins, so i let down and turned my light on. I drew back again and finally found her thru the peep. I let it lose! I heard the arrow hit her and 30 seconds later, she crashed. Rage did its job again!
So i call dad and meet him at the truck and we begin to track. The deer didnt go 30 yards and Died! Only one problem, it wasnt a doe. It was a small buck. Man was i upset. I had been passing on these all year. But i quickly realized how lucky i was and was gratefull for the deer. The deer went to a family that was in need of some food.
With one buck tagged, i will be more selective the rest of the year. I seen 21 deer total, which is the most ive ever seen in one sit. What was a awesome hunt in 80 degree weather. I believe we need to kill some does!
Here is what it looked like from the stand. Notice the red dot. Thats my first arrow i missed with.
