Looking for some help on some loads for a 280. Hornady brass. Using RL19. 150gr eldx. I'm not getting any velocity with book suggestions. I'm way over max but getting decent velocity. No pressure signs. I'm also not getting very good groups. All I've tried are 3 shot groups but nothing worth investigating further. Just looking for a little direction. I also understand speed doesn't mean accuracy. But I don't need a 280 if it won't outperform my 7x57.

Re: 280 rem loads.

I'm using rl26 in my 280ai and a lot of people are using it in their 30-06. It should do well in the standard 280 as well I would imagine.
Btw, I found lowest es/sd with mag primers.

Re: 280 rem loads.

We have a T/C Venture in 280.

Nosler book IMR4350 5 grs. SAAMI OAL length as the magazine won't allow us to shorten the jump.

Federal 210M. R-P brass
This is a very very accurate load.
Here....I have my range notes.....Velocity LL is lower left target

from several forums around the net RL19 has been a go to powder. Some like 22. Thinking 26 is newer offering. But the loads they're using are pretty lame across my chronograph. Like 2650fps. I may not hit 3000 as I'd hoped but I'd prefer to not be that slow.

Re: 280 rem loads.

IMR4350 is just not a very exciting powder choice.

I went to the range with boxes of loaded ammo. The 4350 was 2nd or 3rd to be fired and I stopped right there. No more need. Accuracy and velocity.

Re: 280 rem loads.

I have a win m70. I'm seated out to 3.370. About .005 off the lands. Thinking I've went to 61 grains of powder without issue. Nosler book max is roughly 55.5 gr. I do have quickload suggestion but it's anemic.

Re: 280 rem loads.

I have some imr4350 but I'm nearly out. It's what I've been using in the 7x57 but may switch. Wanting to go to a lighter bullet in the Mauser.

Obviously the AI version is slightly different but I'm easily hitting 3000 with a 160 accubond and rl26. I don't see why 2900 would be hard out of a standard 280 and a 150.

I'm close to 2900 but my accuracy isn't there.

Re: 280 rem loads.

Try the 52 gr and see what you do, those results are not good.

Is that flyer in the picture always your third shot? Looks to me like you have two good shots and a flyer in near every group

When you are seating the bullet try seating about 1/8th then turn the brass a bit and seat some more repeat until the round is fully seated to your desired length.

You using Lee or RCBS seater die? Your press is ...
What brass you using?

we're across the state from one another. I know we've talked before on some other things I was working on. Most notably a 223 cva I finally culled lol.

just now seen you're edited response.....

Dies are rcbs. Just standard die set. Press is a rockchucker from 78. Hornady brass.

Something I failed to mention but probably should. Due to work schedules I don't have the time to adequately let the barrel cool. I simply don't have the time to properly work a load efficiently due to a toddler and momma at work. Where I shoot at home is in the shade which is great but I also lose the target quicker in the evenings due to darkness. I was working on another load for a different rifle so I'd shoot a group with one and shoot a group with the other. At one point I finally quit for a few minutes to let them cool. 100 yards to target.

Re: 280 rem loads.

The 150 eldx should be a good one for the 280.. but like reloading it takes trying different combos.
My 7-08 loves a 150 eldx / big game.

The 140 pill works so well in my 280 with IMR4831.

Re: 280 rem loads.

I was hoping so and it may simply not like the bullet. The velocity has me scratching my head tho. I may try some 140s and see what happens. I've got some 120s as well but would like something a bit heavier. I've played with the 120s a little but abandoned them due to running out of time

Re: 280 rem loads.

Looking thru my powder I don't have enough imr4350 to get started and not sure when I'll get more. I did load some more of the 150s at 48.7 and played with the seating depth on those. I have a decent start on some 120s that I may go back to. But would rather shoot something a bit heavier.

Re: 280 rem loads.

A little update. I took what appeared to be the best group and played with the seating depth. I remember some time back Mr big said he'd take a clover leaf over stringing. So I went with 58.7 and seated them in .020 increments. 5 shots to each depth.

I started out with the 680. First shot was furthest left. Next 4 were nearly flawless. I didn't wait between shots but did let everything cool for about 30 minutes. I had my muzzleloader out and went to it. My daughter also shot her 243 before I shot the 660. Waited about 20 minutes before shooting the 640.

Re: 280 rem loads.

I'll also add the low shot on 660 was my first shot. I have no idea which was the first shot on 640 as it was getting dark and I couldn't make out the holes. As DaveB previously mentioned I had what appears to be one out on my previous groups. I feel this is a benefit to 5 shot groups vs 3. Any advice or comments is much appreciated.

Re: 280 rem loads.

I really like the 680 group, that is what we see with our 280 minus that flyer.

A consistent first shot flyer followed by a tight group is not something I have seen.

I have a BIL in California who shoots in a club. He suggests it is a flinch and says muffle the ears better. My BIL thinks everything is flinch related. He thinks you may be leaning into the gun as you shoot or pulling the trigger instead of slow squeeze.

I could see the first shot pretty well. I was nearly styled in when the second shot surprised me. Thought well I've pulled that one. Shot the other 3 and they went with the pulled shot. I'm gonna try them again and see what happens.

Re: 280 rem loads.

Maybe I'm missing something, what's 640, 660, and 680?

comparator values. 2.640, 2.660, 2.680. I started at 2.700 which was slightly off the lands. Maybe 5-7 thousandths
