270 WSM

Like I needed another gun. Picked up a Rem .270 WSM from Steyr out of the classifieds for a good deal. Thanks man nice meeting you.

Undecided what I want to do with this gun. Never had a short magnum and I typically like to keep things simple and stick with the more popular caliber choices. Factory ammo is not exactly everywhere for these and from what I've seen its not cheap. Part of me wants to pick up a box of factory ammo to see what it'll do. On the other hand I'd like to just use it for a build....which brings me to another question. Is this action the same as any Remington short-action just with a magnum bolt face?

I am not really a short mag fan but I must say the ballistics on the 270 WSM are pretty impressive. Congrats on the new rifle.

The 270 wsm is a handloaders catridge for sure. I have always found the 130gr TTSX or the 140gr accubond with RL22, RL19 or 4831SC work well.

You are correct, it's a short action with a mag bolt face.

glad you took it,,if it was still there tomorrow I would have probably bought it,,I was thinking about a 6.5 GAP 4-S chamber for that action,,

for the 270 WSM I load the 140 SST and a good load of RL19,,,shoots good and flat and will knock the crap out of a whitetail,,

I loaded some 25 WSSM loads for a friend several years back. One thing I noticed right away is that you can't hardly knock one of those short fat cases over on the bench. You never accidentally spill powder or roll a greased case in dust so that it has to be cleaned and re-greased prior to sizing.

You should have a great all around rifle there.

Haha I couldn't stand it any longer. Will probably just use it for a build unless I'm convinced otherwise to try and start playing with this caliber. Could I use this action for any short action caliber?

What would I have to do with the bolt face to accommodate say a .260 Remington. I assume the extractor wouldn't work. Sako extractor work? Better to just buy new bolt?

I could be wrong and I am most of the time but I think it would be cheaper to buy a new bolt rather than try to reduce the size of the bolt face.

I love the wsm. I shoot a 300wsm..... Ballistically it is almost the same as a win mag yet in a short action. Killed a slew of deer with it. Mine is an a bolt. I will love it. Especially if u reload.

no man I would have to keep my 308 bolt,,I have a 308 bbl and 6.5x47 bbl for the same rifle and would just like to be able to have a bbl chambered in the 6,5 GAP for the same rifle,,the 140 Berger Hybirds at about 3300 fps would be a lazer

my Stiller Tac 30 action I think has a PTG bolt,,at least I think Stiller contracts their bolts from PTG,,be careful pricing bolts as sometimes you have to get the springs and pin seperate,,

I have purchased from this guy and I got 200 243 brass never been shot, been factory primed, no dents dings nothing. Literally, just as he described.

If you don't want Federal (not my first choice) I can't find any other brand new/once-fired anywhere.

If you're going to build off of that action a 6.5 GAP is the way to go. If you're going to shoot it in 270 WSM form, pick up some 110 gr. Barnes TTSX or TSXs and pound of IMR 4350 and start playing. Seeing 3550 fps on a chronograph is a lotta fun :grin: or a 130 gr projectile of your choice (preferably bonded) and some 4831 or R19 will do the trick as well.

The WSMs are notorious for feeding like crap so do yourself a favor and keep it a 2 shot (one in the chamber and one in the magazine). If you attempt to reach the lands with the bullet she'll never fit in the magazine anyways, just prop it up on the feeding lip and rock-on.

Brass if hard to find (which you've probably already figured out) so when you do find some, buy plenty. I like mine but at the end of the day it's one of those rounds the world could live without.

I shot federal fusion .270 wsm 130 gr. factory loads out of mine and absolutely dropped everything shot in its tracks . I should have never let my wsm go and will have one again one day . Excellent round IMO. Never tried reloads just didn't feel the need after getting the great results out of the fusions.
