In the field shooting some rounds I worked up. Figured while I'm waiting on the barrel to cool I would post results as I go.

These are 150gr Hornady sst using IMR 4350. Savage model 111.
This is my first target using 47.4 gr

Not impressed at all with any of this. Can you guys analyze this? I felt like I had a good rest. The 150 gr federal is what I was shooting last year. I copied the OAL of the federal rounds as a starting point for the sst.

There were 0 pressure signs. According to the book 52.5 is max. I should load load these and give them a try? The book says the should be loaded at 3.210. Your thinking I need to set them out farther than 3.220?

Generally when you have two shots that are close together and one flyer you need to bump your overall length down a little. How far off the lands are you now?

I'm a rookie. Have no clue.

Get you an OAL gauge or do it the old school way and measure at what seating depth those touch the lands. If you matched the factory loads then I'm willing to bet you are pretty far off the lands right now. Seat it out farther and I bet your groups improve. I'm a so called reloader newbie myself so maybe these other guys steer you right. Pretty good reference article I read the other day on the Berger website about seating depth, pressure, and accuracy.

get a comparator and an oal gauge

seat .010 off lands load max re19 (work up to max)

get back to me

get some 130 accubonds or for cheaps get 140 hndy btsp interlock (not interbond or sst)

Will have OAL gauge and comparator tomorrow. When you say re19 is that reloader 19 (RL-19)?

yes

reloader 19
re19
rl19

made by alliant

or h4831sc

there are several good choices
but those 2 powders are real good

Ok thank you just making sure.

I run 53.5 gr of IMR 4350 and 130 hornday SST in my Ruger M77 MK2 .270 for hunting rounds

In my experience a .270 is either going to want 130 or 150. have to figure out which one it wants to eat.

Can this be correct? Using the aol gauge I came up with 3.400 as OAL to lands with this bullet. The bullets I shot Saturday were 3.220 OAL. The Hornady book says col of 3.210 for the sst.

What kind of gun are you using. That looks a little far out. Are you using a comparator as well as the gauge. Not gonna say it's incorrect because I've loaded bullets .125 past book length

Savage model 111. This picture is of the bullet still in the OAL gauge. Looks far out to me also that's why I'm asking the gurus. Lol I have reset and checked 3 times.
My method was as the instructions suggested. Rod down the barrel in one hand and the aol gauge in the other to get positive feedback on both ends. I did find the second two times I checked that I probably put too much pressure shoving it into the lands a little. I was more delicate and came up with 3.392 the second and third time.

Is that one of the "Gauges" which is a case with a drilled out primer pocket and over sized neck so that you can manually push the bullet to the point where it contacts the rifling then lock it down? If so, then that's where you'd have to seat to touch the rifling. That doesn't mean that will give the best accuracy though. It's a good reference point and something to try with good odds that accuracy could improve. In my opinion "distance to rifling" get's overplayed now as far as making a blanket statement that a given brand and weight of bullet ALWAYS prefers this or that. Every rifle is an individual. You are certainly getting consistent velocities already. I'd use that OAL you just got from the picture above as a MAX and start seating out from where you are(have been loading) .010 or .020 at a time and see what happens. Also check to make sure your magazine can handle whatever OAL you end up going with. Although I have hunted with an OAL beyond the magazines capability before and reduced the rifle to one shot in the chamber with one on the follower. Rarely will you ever be able to fire more than 2 anyhow.

Yes that's the type of gauge used. Forget about the cannular I'm guessing?

I agree with 257. If they'll fit in your box use that as max baseline. If they won't fit in box adjust to make them reliable. It's a hunting rifle. You're not trying to hold 1/4 moa out to 1000

You are correct about not needing that kind of accuracy but I enjoy learning about it. I'm using my 270 to learn with.

That's probably right with that style and weight of bullet. How much bullet do you have still in the neck? The diameter of the bullet (in this case .277") is the general rule of how much engagement you need to be safe. I usually don't count the boattail when measuring that too.

I hope I didn't sound like you shouldn't try to get all the accuracy you can. It's a learning process and there are several here that are willing to help, myself included. I don't load for a 270 but I've loaded bullets with the cannelure and mine look similar to yours

I have .395 left inside the case not counting the BT

Normally I load my bullets to the max length of the magazine box. If I hit lands at that length, I will shorten up.

I didn't measure but still had a ton of room in the mag for these rounds.
