.264 120 bt performance

Shot a big doe Saturday at an angle and noticed the bullet lodged under the skin on the shoulder.. bullet broke two ribs on entrance went through the heart and stopped on the shoulder. Doe was 100 yards .

I've always wondered how ballistic tips hold up. Start weight 120 grains , end weight is 69 grains. Muzzle velocity is around 2800 fps.

Seems like fair performance given that velocity but that's why I shoot accubonds. At 3000fps muzzle velocity, I'm not sure BT's would hold up if encountering bone. I like exit wounds and blood trails if not DRT.

Yep, ballistic tips aren't designed (for the most part) to hold together.

Still, not bad performance, mr Deer id not escape wounded.

We killed a forkie several years back with a 243 ballistic tip. Shoulder hit. The copper jacket was found all over the chest cavity, several ribboned strips of copper stuck in the offside ribs. No exit wound.

Deer bled out in maybe 40 yards.

I've had good luck with Ballistic Tips, been using them for years. I do believe and from what I have read the Nosler BT has been improved since it was first developed.
Out of all the deer I've shot I have never recovered a bullet, this is the first one so I'm impressed with how it didn't fragment. With moderate speeds I believe the BT is a great option. I have some AB also but in reality I don't think they're needed for deer.

From experience so far with the Accubonds they resemble a NBT that mushrooms like a Partition, particularly when they hit bone.

The internal damage is a little less than a partition but the impact of the AB is dissipated inside the animal. We hit a doe in the shoulder and the spine separated. Have had two run/trot 100 yards with no heart-just mush. Neck shot a forkie and near separated head from body. Have yet to recover a single AB.

Definite bad medicine for Mr. Deer.
