Do you reload or rely on commercially available ammo? Both are great deer cartridges, but the 7-08 has a much wider ammo selection on store shelves.
 
I'd kinda lean toward the 7-08 myself. Good availability of factory ammo, and wide variety of bullet weights and configurations to load with.
 
I can't speak for an A Bolt, but its hard to beat a 700. Something about the 6.5's has always intrigued me, so I vote .260.

Can't go wrong with either one IMO.

I would go with 7-08 over the 260 if you don't reload.

Have you looked at the 6.5 Creedmoor at all. Very similar to the .260 but more ammo availability. Grabagun has a great deal on a Savage Lightweight Hunter in 6.5 CM right now.
 
go some where and see what selection for bullets for either 1 is on the shelf,very dang little is what I have seen,online is a different story

IMO ammo is not gonna be readily available at the "store" for either one

sure at bass pro cableas academy you will find more 7/08 on the shelf

but you can buy ammo for both online

i am a die hard 7mm guy
i love 7/08 and rem 700

for me it is a no brainer

however i have nothing bad to say about 260

the deer will die either way i guarantee it
 
I reload and I would still go with the 7mm-08 just because of the wider range of bullet weights. I cant say anything bad about the 260 though. Both excellent rounds.
 
In this little town if you don't shoot 30-30 .243 .270 or a 30-06 your not going to find ammo anyways. With that said I'm used to ordering ammo.
 
Between those two cartridges, I'd just go for the rifle that I liked better. Personally I'd chose the Remington because I am more familiar with them.
 
I have both in a Remington 700 as far as witch cal. I would have to flip a coin both are good. I do thing the 7-08 is a little better for deer in this part of the country.
 
Loved my 260 and regret selling it. Your on line asking the question, so don't worry about ammo availability. Order it online. You get what you want, when you want it, and more than likely Cheaper even including shipping.
 
I have both those calibers and I have a Browning A Bolt in 270. I'd go with the 260 over the 7mm-08 for deer, and I love the A Bolt, so that's my vote.
