Went out to attempt to qualify my Nikon BDC at 500 yds Sat, and the wind was horrendous! 25-30 mph gusting! It blew a box of ammo off the table I was at even. Since I was out there I went ahead and set up, and would wait till the wind broke at the barrel and would squeeze off a shot. 5 shots and I was done, took about 30 min to get that far. At least each shot was with a cold barrel. :mrgreen: I think I found my 500 yd mark tho, but the horizontal stringing in the wind spread them out tho. I really wish I could get out there on a day off, when the wind wasn't so terribly bad. I think I could get 5 shots in the 10 ring on a calm day.

2 in the 10 ring, 2 in the 9, and 1 just inside the 7.

Right now the weatherman is predicting highs in the upper 60's around my area for Sat...only problem is that there's a 40% chance of rain mixed in with it. One of these days I'm gonna hit it when the wind is calm and the ground is dry tho. :)
 
I wish I didn't have to work buddy and I would be there with you! Itching to try these 200gr accubonds out at a little distance. Come to think of it, I think I only have 12 loaded!
 
you must have been timing your shots very well as a 20 mph wind should push a 150 NBT something like 3 feet at 500 yards
 
I was doing my best to mb. It took 30 min or so to get those 5 shots off. I'd be on target, and wait, and wait, and wait, till finally the wind would just die down for a few seconds and then I'd squeeze off a shot. I had no idea where I was hitting either, as I couldn't see thru my spotting scope for the platform I was on vibrating in the wind, blurring my view thru the spotting scope. I just did my best for the 5 shots, then drove down to see the results.

My next wildcat round is going to be a 30-06 case, necked down to accept a BB. :P :lol:
 
Already been done (nearly).

Accelerator. 55 gr solid base spire point cup and core bullet in a sabot in a 30.06 case. If you hit a coyote it just about skins him before he hits the ground. For some reason I really like these things. For a surprise, watch the video here

I still have a few of those as well Dave. My Dad picked them up somewhere back in the 70's I believe, and I still have some of them.
 
That particular load has been giving me under .7 MOA at 100 yds with 3 shot groups, and I've gotten .9" 5 shot groups at 100 yds with it as well. As I said these 5 shots were cold bore b/c I had to wait so long between shots.
 
You've got it dialed in, definitely for vertical!
I used to shoot NRA Service Rifle matches at a place in Idaho on lava flats. At the standing phase, it would rock your whole body. Terrible scores.
 
I can hardly imagine the patience and nerve that must be needed to shoot a match under those conditions! Heck I was all by myself and on the bags, taking my sweet time for each of those shots.
 
Thanks, this is my first attempt at a "long range" rifle, starting with bone stock Win Mod 70, and just worked up the best handload I could for it. It was a decent factory round gun so I figured I could get something better out of it with handloads. I'm happy with it anyway. :)
