How many hunt deer with this round? Does it perform well at close rang say 25 yard, as it does at 200 hundred yards? What factory ammo would be a good deer round. I am looking at geting one in a TC Pro Hunter. Thanks
 
I shoot a 25/06. I actually have 3 rifles chambered in a 25/06. (2 remington 7600 pumps and a Ruger 77 MarkII) My son shoots a Handi rifle in 25/06, and loves it as well. I have killed deer with it at 25 yards and at 130 yards thru the woods. The deer shot at 25 yards ran further than the one shot at 130 yards. I used 120 gr Noslet BT. It is a ideal cartridge for the size deer we have in Tenn. I had read an article once years ago that the 25/06 is the perfect Antelope round due to the knockdown power and the flat trajectory for wide open shots.
 
I have had two and just recently re-purchased the first one back and it will never be sold again! Its a Rem 700 Classic. Only got to hunt with once last year because I bought it late in the season, but I killed one doe with it at 265yds.

I also had a H&R Ultra in 25 and it was tack driver with winchester supreme balistic silvertips. The 700 also liked them the first time I owned it, but I switched to Rem bullets last year. I can't remember what they are, but there not in the standard green/yellow box like the coreloks, these are in the green/gold box and shoot very well. I have'nt had time to get any reloaded for it yet.

Between those two guns, I killed truck loads of deer with'em, some right under the tree, and some were on out there. Never had any problems at any range. The H&R had very little recoil, but the 700 classic will stomp your lights out. Its possibly the hardest recoiling rifle I have ever shot. I don't know why it kicks so bad, but it does. Everyone who has ever shot it says the same thing, "that d%$n thing kicks like a mule".
 
If you're recoil sensitive, it's one of the best long range rigs out there. (if you're not, there are a ton of other cartrides which will far surpass it :) )

It won't kill deer any more or less dead then your average run-of-the-mill cartridges like the .308, 30-06, etc at normal hunting ranges.
 
i have a custom gun built in 2506 with a 26" douglass xx barrel. it is a gunb shooting gun, but too heavy to tote a lot. my 120 gr loads average 3240 fps
 
I like the Hornady Light Mag with 117gr bullet.

People think they kick hard, but I think it's just perception. The cartridge has a fast pressure curve from what I've been able to research. This "quick" curve makes the shooter think it is kicking hard, but in reality the foot/lbs are not bad it just hits you quick.

I hope at least part of that makes sense.
 
I have a Ruger Hawkeye in 25/06. I much prefer the shot to be 50 yards or further with this gun. I shoot the Hornady Superformance 117gr SSTs and like others I have shot deer close and they run farther than the ones shot at 200 yards. Also do not shoot anything you want to eat with this round up close. I have a very graphic photo of the results with this round and a doe at 40 yards and will text it to you if you want to see why.

These bullets are moving quite fast and the recoil is different than say a 30/06. The 30 cal is the same case with a much heavier bullet so it gives you a nice punch in the shoulder. The 25 in the same gun will give you a nice slap. It doesn't hurt it just feels different.
 
I have owned several 25-06's through the years. Remington 700's and a few Ruger's. I currently have 2 now, a H&R Ultra Hunter and a Remington 700 Mountain DM. I have never owned one that one would not shoot, always shot Hornady or Ferdeal Premium ammo. I like the Remington Mountain rifle (topped with a Nikon Monarch 5.5x16.5) better than any that I have ever owned so far. It is very lightweight and is extremely accurate shooting Hornady ammo.
 
I shoot the 100 NBT with 56 grs IMR 4831,at 3420 fps,,zeroed at 300 it is never over 3 inches high and is 8 low at 400 and 18 low at 500 where it shoots 3 inch groups,,

killed deer from 10 yards to 480 and they never go out of sight,,but they do blow some meat up pretty good,,

I have a Ruger no.1 and I shoot the Federal Premium 117 grain Sierra Game Kings. I haven't shot many deer with it and none were 25 yards or less. All the deer I have shot have been between 50 - 125 yards and none have made it out of sight. The gun and ammo combo shoots very well for me.
