Both are great rounds and will kill any deer in Tennessee. 7-08 has a little more recoil but managed recoil loads should help that.

I hunted with a Remington 700 .243 for a few years, that was the softest shooting deer rifle I've ever shot.

As much as I love the 7-08, the 243 has impressed me with the terminal damage when using a 100gr SGK, it's very impressive.
Either will work just fine...
 
Got my daughter a Rem Mod 770 in .243 she's been shooting it for a couple of years now and is only 10. That gun will shoot, and she can shoot it!

in what way? the factory loads for the 08 are pitiful compared to the 243,55g-100g for the 243 ,the 100g 243 has more energy than the reduced load for the 08 the last time I looked so any advantage gained by the 08 is lost ,take a look on the shelf for 08 loads in your sporting goods store and see what they carry, bass pro had 1 or 2 choices for them and I think they were both 140g. hand loading doesn't count for a lot of folks.
 
The full power loads in 7mm-08 will blow the .243 away. Most people don't really need reduced loads anyway. The 7mm-08 don't kick a whole lot anyway. But, just pick the .243 if that's really what you want. Either is ok for der.
 
roverboy you might want to go look at the Remington web site for the ballistics barely over 1200lbs at 200 yards and dropping fast. its not my data just the manufactures .

Although the 7-08 does have more energy and can even be used for elk hunting with heavier bullets
I think we all forget dead is dead.
Several elk have fell to the 243 also...
I wouldn't say this if it wasn't true with my experience with the 243.
Two of my most impressive kills were with a 243 at 200yrds, one doe barely made it 30yrds, an eight point ran in a 40yrd circle and fell dead in his tracks... both shot with the 243 100gr SGK.
I think that's plenty killing power for a youth hunter.

The 260 is a ballistic match to the 7mm-08, and the 7mm-08 has alot more ammo choices and is more ready available

Agreed if you don't handload. But if you do, a useful weight range of 85 gr bullets to 160 gr bullets makes the 260 very versitile
 
Ballistics asside 243 is on every shelf and in several weights with a minimal price. Not everybody stocks 7/08 and it's 25% higher at least from what I've seen. I don't shoot my 25/06 much because of this as much.
