I'm purchasing a rifle for my son before Christmas comes around but I don't know what to get him. I'm looking for a .243 for him, I went to Bass Pro and saw the Remington 700 series .243 and I liked it a lot. What are my other options out there? I honestly don't want to spend top dollar because this will be his first rifle.

I think I'm going to go ahead and make the choice and purchase me the Remington 770 for $317.00 at my local Wal-Mart.

Dude I urge you to go to Sportsmans in Collierville and look at the Stevens 200 in 243. You will not be sorry. And while you are there compare it to the Remington 770. Just my two cents. I bought the Stevens 200 in 243 last year and this rifle shot 5-5 shot groups out of the box under an inch at 100 yards. You cant beat the Savage/Stevens accuracy. $289 out the door.

Depending on his size, the Ruger Compact M77 is a sweet little gun, but it's about $600 sans scope. Here's a pic of mine, and a 100 yard three shot group. It's a .260 rather than a .243, but it's avail in .243 or 7mm/08 too.

I got my son a youth Remington 770. Darn accurate gun....the scope is not bad either. I like his so much I will be getting me a 770 as well.

Tikka, a used Rem 700 or Win 70, or a Savage. Howa also makes a compact or youth version.

The Howa is a good low dollar shooter and if you get the youth model it also comes with a full size stock for him as he grows.

Thanks for the suggestion guys!

At my local Bass Pro shop there is a Rossi 20ga/.243 combo that comes with a Remington hard case for $229.99. Good gun/deal?

2 my nephews have them & are accurate, hard to beat the price/combo deal,i like the nef rifles better but hard to find the combo packages,mike243

The NEF rifles have better triggers and better quality in my opinion. I have three and they all shoot well. Great for a starter rifle.

Bought my son the 243 & 20 ROSSI combo. Has been a great gun and very accurate. I would definitely consider it. The 3 combo that includes a 22 would be my choice. It allows them to shoot it all with the confidence of the same feel of gun.
