.243/RL-17

Picked up a new gun for my youngest daughter today. Looks like '17 might be the ticket for 85 tsx's.

Any experience here?

I've used H4350 and IMR 4831 with good results. Barnes recommends Ramshot Hunter powder for that bullet, but my local gun store doesn't carry that.

I haven't tried RL17 in the 243 yet. Magpro and RL19 are some powders that I've read do real well.

Yep, Barnes says Ramshot Hunter is the most accurate in their test barrel. I have read that they also reccommend seating the bullet .05" of the lands to start. Most say good accuracy comes at .03"-.08" off, depending on the rifle. I was under the impression that just barely kissing the lands was what you wanted in reloading, but they say different. I'm new at reloading, but I bought some 85TSX for my sons .243 as well.

Kissing the lands works with a lot of bullets but the solid copper Barnes seem to work better with the gap.

Because TSX Bullets are all-copper, they have different pressure characteristics compared to conventional jacketed bullets. In our lab, we have experienced best pressures and accuracy when TSX Bullets are seated .030″ � .070″ off the lands (the grooves or rifling in a barrel.) The majority of the time, we�ve seen optimum accuracy when bullets are seated .050″ off the lands, so start there. Then move backward or forward in .005″ � .010″ increments to find the �sweet spot� for your particular rifle.

Give IMR4831 a try with that grain bullet. I know..... you would think it would be too slow a powder for the application, but it groups amazingly well in 243's I have loaded for.

My youngest is 6. She just got done preping brass for her gun (she does not know she is getting one).

She did all the lubing, re-sizing, and primer pocket cleaning. I trimmed-to-length and she has them tumbling.

Gunsmith is adjusting the trigger and shortening LOP. Gun will be ready by Wednesday.

If you want a lower-kicking reduced load, go with H4895 per Hodgdon's website for Youth loads.
