mediocre at best. a bit much for smaller varmints and marginally small for deer. for deer i would go with the 270. for varmints a 223 or 22-250.

My point was that the 243 is about the best deer/varmint combo cartridge, never said it was the best at both, but what would you say would be a better choice if you had 1 cartdridge to do both?
 
Whichever one makes you happy. .027" (twenty seven thousandths of an inch) doesn't mean squat to a deer.

I have both and each are good.I get a kick out of people who say my wife..or my kid uses a 243 and talk about the deer they have shot.They DONT use a 243 though... too small!!! That cracks me up. It is all about shot placement. An experienced hunter is deadly with a 243. Not so experienced...there is a little room for error as the 130 grn bullet has a little more to it. On a big 200 lb plus deer. I opt for bigger. Have killed them as fast with a 243 as a 300 mag. though. But I want consistant quick kills.
 
The .243 is a lot like the 30/06, but on the other end of the scale.

The .243 is good for deer and lots of things smaller, the 30/06 is good for deer and larger. Neither of these two is the optimal bullet specifically for deer.

If you wanted a rifle specifically for deer, I think the top three cartidges are the .270 WIN, the 7mm/08, and the .260 REM. Find a rifle that feels good, and get it in one of these rounds.

If you already have a .243, and can shoot it well, by all means use it. If I were buying a new rifle, I think the 260 or the 7mm/08 have all the advantages of the .243 (short action, light weight, low recoil) with greater bullet selection in deer-sized weights.
 
The 308win is a good choice for deer and ammo is alot cheaper and can be bought in bulk. The 308 is very easy to reload and will compete with any of the above at 200yds or less.
 
If i had to pick one gun it would be the 25-06, with bullet weights up to 120 grns at 3200 fps that is all you need for deer and how about a 90 grn at 3600 for varmits and deer. My ten year old son killed a doe at Yucchi last year with the 90 grn bullet at 256 yards--ranged with laser rangefinder and this deer never took another step. thats pretty good performance and now he won't use anything else, just pick what you want and shoot it alot! oh yea, and the bullet did exit too!

Yup, 25-06 is a dandy. I've gotten very similar results with my 270 with 130 gr at 3100 fps and 90 gr Sierra Hollow Points at 3550 fps. It's still a long action, though, so the 260 REM has the advantage if you want a short, light rifle.
