243 loads

I know imr4350 and imr4064 are good powders for 243. But which is better for 87-95 grainers. I'm currently loading varget for 75 grain hp and getting good groups. Am I cutting myself short with varget and bullet combo or would I be better off with a different powder

I have used H-1000 and RL22 with good results, but I shoot 105gr Bergers.

100 & 105, IMR7828 Can't share I am over Nosler book max.
I have some lighter bullets but cannot recall the recipe, I do belive they are 60 grains or less. I loaded them up so when we take a kid to the range they can shoot em up.

You'll notice slower burning powders than you might expect. Take a look at Nosler/Hodgdon/Alliant reload data for a starting point.

I don't use magnum primers in 243 but am consdering it for some next summer testing.

I have a hornady book but it doesn't list varget for any load. Sierra and hodgen does and I can get nosler info as well.

I have heard good things about i4350 and i4064. Just wondering which seams to be better. I've heard good things about the reloader powders too. Just looking for more encouragement one way or the way

IMR4064 is Hodgdon speak for Varget... They are VERY similar. Hodgdon owns IMR and Winchester powders, so many of the powders are very similar. You can often extrapolate data for cross-reference from a burn chart and load recipes. If you already have Hodgdon Varget, you should be able to come up with a SIMILAR load as the listed 4064 recipe.

I've used both varget and imr 4064 in 308. 4064 is a bit slower but not unacceptable. I use the hodgen website quite regularly when developing loads cause the more info I have I feel the better off I am.

I've read that varget is better suited to the lighter bullets in 243 where the imr 4064 and imr 4350 are better suited for the heavier. I'm not sure that is the case as I haven't tested varget in the heavier bullets. But all the data that I've looked at has the varget with lower velocities. I know speed doesn't mean accuracy. But I also don't want to lose velocity if Ithere is a better alternative.


I'm new to loading for 243. Just looking for what has worked and really open to all suggestions. At this point 4064 is my better option cause I can use it in the two rifles I load for. But I'm not against using others

4350 will work with 100 gr bullets and 20-22 inch barrels,,if you have a longer barrel the slower powders IMR4831 and slower will get more speed with good accuracy,,

I have had good success with H-4350 and RL-17 with 80gr ttsx. Speed is a little quicker with RL-17, but either one will hit 3,400 easily.

I load for 243, 260, 270, and 308. Any bullet weights I've used I've been able to get good results with IMR 4350 or H4895. I've had less satisfactory results with 4064 and H335. Now I just use 4350 in everything except the 308 or youth down-loads, in which I use H4895.
