243 Handi Rifle

anybody have any decent loads for a 243 handi rifle for varmits..

I'm just wanting something accurate to shoot beavers. THe 22 mag just isn't cutting it over 100 yards


Bullet i tried is a 55 grain Nosler Varmageddon.
Power i've tried is IMR 4064
41,43, 44, 44.5 grain - No good
45 (max) grain some better , 3-4" groups, but was showing signs of pressure, sticky extraction & flat primers.

lightest bullet I shoot in a 243 is 70 grain ballistic tips. I run 47 grains of IMR4350 and it is accurate. My rifle is a Remmie ADL in 243 22 inch barrel twist is 1 in 10 i believe.

I have around 150 Nosler 70gr, Ballistic tips (2nds) for a 243. I can get a good count on them if your interested in trying them. They will shoot under an inch in both of my 243's but I have decided to just use my deer hunting load for my limited varmint hunting.

thx.. i never could get this gun to group worth a crap with factory loads, except for the Federal Fusion 95 grain bullets. I may try going heavier & seeing.

Regardless , I got some varmint bullets for the 22 mag, and sighted it in, and took one of those tree killing varmints out yest eve @ 120 yards..

I didn't have much accuracy with 100 grain bullets in the handi-rifle and learned from other sites the rifle twist is too slow for the bigger bullets. For fun, I may buy some smaller bullets to see how it does.

I've never not had the 85 gr Sierra game king not shoot well. The hpbt would be hell on those beavers.

The 4064 should shoot. Try different lengths? That little bullet..... I would start really low. Too fast and it will tumble... Also ur barrel may not be twisted for a pill that is that light. Consider a 75 grainer?

thx.. going to try the 95 grain nosler.... too hot outside to fool with it now though.. the beavers can relax till it cools off a little bit

I had that problem with Sierra 50 grain blitz bullets in the 22 CHeetah. I used the load for quite a while on groundhogs around the farm until I ran out and bought another lot of the same bullet. The load chronographed around 4,180 fps and had always shot around 1/2 moa and rarely ever exited a groundhog. I loved it but the new lot of bullets had some difference that caused them to come apart mid air. I put targets up and got completely key holed bullets. Funny that they still held under 1 moa @ 100yds sideways. :mrgreen: Also you could see the spatterings of molten lead all around the actual bullet hole on the paper. Of course I had bought 500 of those softer bullets..... Not really a problem as I have a whole fleet of 22 center fires and they are a perfect match for the 221 Fireball.

Bullets that are extremely light for caliber rarely tumble. They do, however, spin apart and can lose their jackets if pushed too fast. This is what you guys are seeing.
