Not my first choice, but it's a fairly popular choice for skilled shooters, with bullets designed for whitetails.

A 243 is all I use now. I used to alternate between it an.d my 270WSM . I realized
the 243 kills the heck out of deer so that's all I use now. The first deer I ever
shot with it was at 180 yards . It dropped like a stone the shot took out lungs and the top
of his heart. This is the strange part the next deer was 15 yards away I shot it
and it ran for 50 yards. It still fell within eyesight though. I wish I could say it
was because of premium loads but all I use is the cheap blue box federal. I haven't
lost one yet. My friend tried to get me to buy the premium bullets but hey,
you can only kill them so dead. :D

I've killed over 250 deer in 20 years with a 243 and in all the time I have only had 1 take more the 1 step after pulling the trigger. Still to this day one of my fav rounds for anything from crows and coyotes to deer

I like the 95 fusions and 95 SST personally.

i hate the 243 cartridge

however it will kill deer fine and even buffalo well a big female one

95 nbt over re 15 @ 2850 fps

I've heard you say this before but don't recall ever hearing why you don't like the 243. I see you defend it as an acceptable cartridge for deer so I'm curious why you don't like it. As for me, I admit that I have my own cartridge prejudices. For me, it's the 7mm Remington Magnum and to a lesser degree the 357 Magnum. What turned me against them both is not anything about either cartridge but the people who commonly use them. It seems like every time I would run into a gun "know-it-all", (who typically have what little they do know all messed up), they shoot a 7mm Remington Magnum. When they tell you what they shoot they do so while squinting their eyes and leaning their head back with lots of excessive confidence. The whole experience has soured me on what is honestly a great cartridge, even if it's overpowered for most eastern deer hunting. I see the same attitude frequently with the 357 Magnum as many who own one think it is the most powerful weapon ever devised. I remember one time talking to some of my friends at work telling them about some penetration tests I'd been doing over the weekend with the 500 grain .458 steel jacketed solids from Hornady in the 460 Weatherby. One of these 357 geniuses came strutting up saying that if my 460 couldn't do the job, he had a 357 Magnum that would shoot through anything. He was dead serious and about as cocky as a Mohamed Ali right before a fight. I just stared at the guy in disbelief as he supposedly had an Engineering degree?!?!

OK, that's why I have cartridge prejudices.......... :)

you hit the nail on the head bud

your 7mm mag comments were dead on and thus the same applies for me with 243 its more the hunters that shoot it than the rd itself

i just hate it same as i do chevy trucks but i am not stupid there are several chevy trucks with 200k or 300 k miles and run great same as the 243 will kill deer all day long

it is just folks that think the 243 is the hammer and yet a 223 wont kill deer

IMO the 7/08 the best cartridge all around but the same could be argued for the 308 30/06 270 25/06 257 roy so forth and so on

i love the 7's for the bullet selection alone
7/08
280
7 saum
7 rum
7stw
7 mag
7/338 rum

but to each their on

i have handloaded for 2 particular 243
one is for a good buddies daughter
the load i mention above she has killed 3 deer and a buffalo with it

the other is in work for bud in west tn
it will either be the same load or with a 90 accubond

no one of the face of the earth will ever convince me different a 120 nbt at 2725 is the best youth / woman load there is 7/08

Bullet selection is far more important that cartridge selection. Matching the proper bullet to the proper cartridge and to the proper game you intend to harvest is the key. Shot placement is paramount.

very true

I would never hunt with one but that just me to many better calibers on the market but that's just me. I know it has killed a ton of deer though. Just hate the round.

I switched to a 243 about 1996 and never had to shoot one twice. The setup is a Stevens 200 with a Leupold 3x9 and Winchester Powermax bonded hp 100gr. About 4 years ago I was on this late season doe shoot thing at a place in W-Tn. I had one on a powerline at 325,the rest was real good and no wind, that doe hit the ground at the sound of the gun and never twitched a ear. The 243 is just fine,I love mine.

Still hunting with 243 I got when was kid. It's killed many. Found about half will run about 25-50 yards. But can't remember the last time I lost a deer bring shot with it. Put it in the boiler and dead deer. And big plus to me is does not mess up near the meat as higher caliber

I grew up in Alabama and you could kill 2 a day. State gave us 60 doe tags a year to fill and being the youngest of 3 you can guess who got a majority of those tags lol. Over the past 10 years if I kill 1 a year that's a lot hahah.

When I was in my 20's and 30's I averaged about 10 deer a year.

I've slowed down quite a bit in my 50's. I only average about 6 a year now.
