Has anybody had any dealings with the Nosler 95gr ballistic tip? Have you got exits most of the time or blowups? I'm loading a batch at about 2850fps to use this year and was kinda wanting to know what to expect. Thanks!

A friend used to use Ballistic Tips in his .243 handloaded. He said the 95 gr. was like a bomb up close. It killed ok but he likes his bullets to go out the other side. He loads and shoots 100 gr. Partitions now. Expensive but, he said they're awesome.

For Deer? Why not use soft tip? I use Sierra Game Kings for my son's 243.
more accuracy (usually)
So, you're talking what, 1/4" @ 100 yrds difference, maybe? With an 8" target? My GameKings still shoot 3/4" @100yrds in a cheap Savage Axis. My thought was ballist tips were more for varmint with their explosive expansion.

ballistic tips were designed for increased accuracy and longer ranges and a thinner jacket to expand at slower speed at distance

varmint bullets have extra thin jackets to explode on impact at any speed and range

having said that there are a few exceptions to the rule
120 nbt in .284 has a thicker jacket than all other bt bullets in .284 as was demonstrated when we milled all of them in half to inspect not to mention i have killed at least 80 deer with that bullet from speed of 2725 to 3295 to 3595 muzzle velocity at distances of 10 yards to 280 ish

the bullet will hold together for pass through at 36 yds at 3595 fps

as far as the 95 nbt

i hate 243 with a passion i have no use for one however i do load rds for a friends daughter she has had great sucess with it to include a dang buffalo in doing my research on bullet selection (as I have no experience with 243) i came upon a few good threads

here are a few highlights

The .243" 95-grain Ballistic was designed by Gail Root. Gail was perhaps Nosler's most talented ballistician.

Gail is and was a .243 Winchester NUT and he designed the 95-grain to be HIS big game killing bullet. Goodness only knows how many big 6X6 bull elk Gail took with the 95 and most of them with a single well-placed shot.

I know of at least one record-class Nilgai bull that Gail killed with the 85. Nilgai have the well-earned reputation of being almost bulletproof. The bull fell at the shot.

Gail also used the 95 to collect his magnigicent B&C typical whitetail.

Gail was proud of the 96=5s performance of big game; it's great penetration, superb accuracy and killing performance is amazing. This is one bullet that never had to go back for re-design.

Yes, I've killed big game with the.243 95-grain Ballistic ... maybe thirty head of assorted mule deer, whitetail, antelope and one quite decent black bear. And, YES, one raghorn 5X5 bull elk that measured about 285 B&C. I've never had to shoot any big game animal more than once and the animals either dropped in place or struggled for less than 20 yards.

The single bull elk I killed with the 95-grain fell as if electrocuted. I was using a Runger Number One in 6mm Remington Normal.

Naysayers will cuss and discuss the Ballistic Tip ... and that ain't my problem. I'm only telling you what I know for a fact and I have considerable experience with the 95-grainer and have found it to be a superb big game bullet.

Steve

PS. If I was shooting foxes, coyotes and bobcats, I WOULD NOT use the 95-grain Ballistic Tip. It is for this purpose that Gail designed the 70-grain Ballistic. Gail was justifiably proud of both the 95 and the 70 ... they each were made for a specific purpose and they both accomplish their goals wonderfully.

By the way, Gail pretty much killed stuff with two rifles. Literally ALL of his big game was slain cleanly with his .243 Winchester Normal.

And for prairie dogs, varmints of all types and predators, Gail shot a Remington 700 that he had barreled and chambered for .221 Fireball ... and he loaded 40-grain Ballistics.

Truly, many times, my friend Gail has whopped my but seriously with his .221 Fireball rifle, while I was using my max-loaded .223 Ackley Improved. Gail will always have my total and utmost respect as a man, a ballistician and a stone-cold killer.

I shot those Nosler bt and I found a load. 40gr IMR4831 at 2.68. My stock Stevens 200 put 3 almost under a quarter at 100 yds.

Sweet! Shot an antelope and a few deer with the 95gr BT out of my Tikka .243. Bullet performed well.

DA, good to hear about the .284 120 grain; I'm looking for a 120 gr for my 7mm-08.

I've shot several deer with NBTs in different calibers with good success. The only one even close to a "blowup" was a nice 12 point shot at 15 yards. Not a lot of blood and no real exit hole, but we found him piled up within 75 yards so no complaints.

I used the 95 gr SST in my 243 and killed both deer and coyotes with it; it sounds like the 95 NBT will be fine.

Yep works good. We hit a buck at less than 30 yards on the youth hunt a few years back with a 95 grain Ballistic tip. He ran maybe 40 yards, no through and through, no blowup. The bullet peeled back into very large petals, at least two broke off and cartwheeled through the vitals embedding in the offside ribs.

A very good load is the Alliant Powder Reloader 19. The load is I think 5 grains more than the Nosler Book max for the same powder. Start around 42 grains and go up. Look for a change in bolt lift. Start about .010 off the lands.

If no RL 19 grab a pound of IMR7828.

Well, haven't gotten around to the 243 yet but I did have an interesting run in with a sluggun. I shot a big doe the other day with a 20 gauge Rottweil Laser slug. It looks like a big wadcutter bullet and acts like one on deer. It cut a quarter sized hole going in and a half dollar size going out, the short blood trails, one on each side, were Texas Chainsawish! Very, very impressed.

I have been shooting the Nosler 95gr BT for about 14 or 15 years now out of my Rem 700. Killed many deer with it, most dropped in their tracks. Never had an issue with blowups.
