243 bullet choice????

hey guys my son won a 243 at a sportsmans expo. It is a youth with a 20inch barrel. what bullet weight and brand do you guys have good luck with. And whats your oppion on the 243 vs a 30-30.

I had good luck with accuracy and on the one deer I killed out of the Federal Fusion in .243 when I had one.

Ive had good luck with the Hornady 100gr btsp. Ive also heard alot of good stuff about the Fusions.

I have been shooting Winchester Power Max ammo out of mine. I have no complaints with them. They are accurate, work well on deer, and they dont cost a fortune.

I have killed them with no problems with winchester 100g,100g corelocks.95g rem accutips.federal 100g.i would pu any of them & not feel bad about a bullet choice.its a flat shooting round that many other caliburs cant match.some have 1000'lbs at 400 yards.find 1 that your gun like & put it in the heart/lungs & they wont make it over 50'.

I handload 100 gr Hornady B.T.S.P's for my .243 at around 3000 fps. It's a deer killin machine. And accurate to boot.

243 Fusion 95 gr bullets are awesome.

I handload 100 gr Sierra GameKings but I like the Winchester 100 gr powerpoints in factory ammo. Accurate,inexpensive and kill like a lightning bolt.

I am kind of a Nosler fan and if you handload, this is a nice recipe. This is a 9.5 twist 1984 Rem 700 ADL.
FYI, Shooters Pro shop has some very nice prices on a wide selection of Nosler bullets.

95-grain Fusions in a .243 work great for my son and I. He shoots them from a NEF Handi Rifle and I shoot them out of a Remington 700SPS.

80 or 85 gr Barnes TTSX or TSX


IMO use a premium bullet in a .243

Hornady has some new SST ammo called Hornady Custom Lite.... they have an 87gr SST for the .243

Looking forward to trying the Accubond myself. Been shooting the 95gr combined technology ballistic tip. Also have the 95gr Nosler ballistic tip. Been hunting with a .243 for the past 16 years and will continue to so.

I got some 90 grain accubonds and they are on our list to load up and shoot this season. Again, Shooters pro shop has em right now, 14.95 for 50.

Yep. Shooters pro shop constantly has inventory changing as word gets out about the bargains. You have to check frequently-2, 3 times a week. The thing is, I have about 1,000 of these "Blems" and they are not blems at all, literally perfect.

Mr. Big- Yeah, they did about 4 months ago. About ten hours after I first saw them they were gone. You can tell when a product is offered and sells out because the space is there, but empty.

I've seen then go from 35 to 16 offers in one day. They have a wish list, but I cannot seem to make it work. If I ever see them again I'll order some and PM you right away.

I would only use a 30-30 if I had a sentimental lever action rifle.

In my 243 we've shot deer with the Hornady SST and the Barnes 85 gr TSX in handloads. If I was buying factory I'd get the Fusion.

This month's American Hunter magazine has a good comparison on small caliber monolithic bullets, using a .243 as the test rifle.

100gr hornady btsp has my vote, every deer iver ever shot with mine either fell flat or ran less then 60yrds and blood trails a blind man could follow. only shot 1 with barnes ttxp and wasnt real impressed, 85gr barnes TXP knocked anotherone off its feet, gonna give them another try but I honestly believe its hard to beat the btsp

Killed deer with both. The .243 is better all around in my opinion. For deer hunting, the Remington Core-Lokt in 100gr is a good choice. They're about $18.00 a box and have performed good on the deer I've shot with them.
