243 ammo?

short story i have a 2nd gen savage 110 i bought at a poacher auction. all of my reloading stuff is still packed up.

what ammo have yall had good luck with in 243? ive tried some hornady deer hunter but it shot horribly. want to try some other brands and see if it will shoot before i try a recrown or rebarrel.

I've always seen federal fusion and the cheap federal blue box perform well on paper and critters.

100 gr Remington corkokts were always very effective before I started handloading.

80g Barnes TTSX, 90g Nosler Accubond. Sig Sauer 90 accubond have always been my go to for that caliber. IMO ammo type for whitetail with it is really important

If you can find them, those 85g Sierra gamekings are awesome as well

I have used and shot a 243 for 30 years and killed a dumptruck full of animals with it. Was my favorite caliber for a long time.

Win siler ballistic tips, federal blue box and rem corlocts of thise three one will usually give great accuracy and good killers

comes down to what you want to spend and what type of terminal performance you are looking for. I lean toward pass through weight retention type of person so I generally like to hunt with barnes or something like an accubond. If you prefer the internal energy transfer type performance then go more to a ballistic type, gameking, or corelokt type of bullet.

I loved the Federal 100 grain Sierra game kings. Then of course they stopped making them. So I have switched to Federal blue box 100 grain power shock.

I've killed a bunch with 100gr corlockts. Got some Barnes 80gr TTSX to try but haven't shoot them yet.

I have had a 243 since mid-1980's. The 90-grain Accubond took me nearly three years of try and try again until I found the right combo. The 95, 100, and 105 gr Partition were easy to find the magic charge weight and powder.

So, stick to heavier weight bullet.

95 grain partition federal was perfect in my Winchester 1968 mod 70 until it was stolen about 20 years ago.
They are still just as good in my current 243 bolt action

My favorite round is the Winchester SuperX 100 grain powerpoints.

I've killed so many deer over the years with a 243. It's my favorite caliber for a reason.

My wife's model 10 in 243 is not very picky. It shoots the 100 grain factory load we tried accurately. Winchester power points and corelokts both shot under 1 inch 100 yard groups.

I load Hornady 100 grain interlocks for her for it under imr4350, they shoot tighter than factory ammo.

thanks guys, i have a couple of boxes of 100gr power points. if that does shoot worth a flip ill try a box of the others and go from there.

I've seen more bang flops with this caliber than I ever saw with my .270! There's something about this lil bullet zaps em on the spot.

Speed kills, the only other rifle that has more bang flops is my muzzle loader, I rarely got a pass through with power belts but most fell right there, pour the lungs out of both, lot of shock to the nervous system when it blows up in the lungs. Have heart shot deer that ran with the 300wm and a pass through, not with the 243. Just bought a 6mm arc hopefully kill a deer with it some day.

95-grain Federal Fusions. Shoot them in two .243's and also use them for my .270.

I've used the 95gr. Federal Fusions out to just shy of 300 yds and it worked really well as they are a bonded bullet. Complete penetration at that distance. Rem 100 gr Core-Lokts worked equally as well. I've used 85, 95, and 100 gr. Partitions. One worked as good as the other.

I just bought a 243 today so was glad to find this thread. I was hoping to load 90gr Sierra game changers because I already have those for 6ARC but I doubt my 1/10 twist rate is up for those.

They may spin, it would be worth a try. The 1/10 twist hamstrings the 243 with some of the longer bullets.

I put the bullet length in minus the tip at a velocity of 2900fps and it shows it marginally stable. That said I'm shooting 105's from a 1/9.125" twist with less stability than your formula shows and they punch holes out to 1k.


Be worth a try.
