.223 loads

Ok seeing that I have a new stevens m200 .223 rem in the layaway, I'm gonna need a few good handloads. I've got 50, 52, 53, 55, and 60gr bullets and the twist in the rifle is 1:9. What's yalls load specs?

The only other bolt gun I've loaded for in .223 was a remington sps tactical with a 1:9 twist 20" heavy barrel and I never did get that gun to its full potential.

My SPS Tactical loves the 55gr. pills loaded over 27.5gr of Varget Powder. This is a compressed load so don't be alarmed when you hear the powder crunching.

MY 16 AND 18 INCH BBLS Loves H322,,I never can get 27.5 grs of varget in a 223 case,,for the 55 bgr loads,,but I do use it for the 69 gr load,,

Here is what has worked in my Stevens 200 .223:

Load #1:
- 26.4 gr Varget
- 55 gr VMAX
- Win brass
- CCI 400

This will yield around an avg velocity of 3067 fps.

Load #2:
- 24.6 gr Benchmark
- 55 gr MidwayUSA Dogtown
- Win brass
- CCI 400

This will yield an avg velocity of 3000 fps.

Neither load is overly fast but will yield a very accurate load with low extreme spreads and standard deviations.

On new brass I cant, but once fired brass I can. I only neck size my cases after I've fired them through my rifle. 27.5gr will fill it up then I put my finger over the case and shake to settle the powder a bit, from there I let the bullet and press do the rest.

I figured some of the bullets might get pushed out over time but every one I've checked is still right where it was when loaded.

With 50 to 55`s I`d use Plateau Hunter`s powder in 748 Winchester or H335 has always worked good. If I were to buy a new label to try I`d have to give IMR8208 a run. I have a pound to test in 6BR as soon as I can get back out. I used it for fireforming BRX and it shot very good.

I've not loaded any of the lighter bullets but with 60gr. Hornady VMax my 1-9 twist likes 25.0 grs. of H335 in Winchester cases and CCI BR4 primers. I've used that load for action shoots but for top accuracy I load the 68 grain Hornady or 69 grain Sierras over 24.7 grains of RL15. There are a lot of ways to skin that cat.

That's what I'm wondering as well...

Must be only certain types of brass, a little thinner than many. Or a drop tube, but that's too much work for the little .223 for me.

I am yet to see the advantage of Varget in 55 gr or less bullets,I love it with 69`s but with light bullets there are much better choices,,my older brother uses 335,,Daddy still uses BLC-2,and I even know one old coot that has 2,000 loaded with 3031,,

I use 322 just because it meters well,,has good velocity with 16 inch bbls and shoots good tight groups,,

unless your bbl is bent,,just about anything between 4198 and 4064 will shoot pretty good from a 223

For dangerous game like that I'd prefer a little larger caliber. Never know when fluffy might come for you. LOL!

Would 60gr hornady sp be heavy enough for deer or should I fork out the $ for 60gr partitions?

No idea. That's kinda thick for a .223 bullet ain't it? Lol

You are right, it is a good weight for you but too thick.

I shot then in the sps tactical I used to have but the groups weren't the best. Not the worst either. I guess ill have to try them and see what happens. Who knows, it could be like the time I accidently dropped about 200gr of varget in a pound of IMR4350. It was a bad idea but I loaded a few rounds with it anyway
And it shot pretty friggin good.

Should shot placement stay the same since its a smaller bullet or should I aim closer to he spinal cord? And what's the max distance a. 223 could ethically take a deer?

I let Ethan use the R15 all season,,he killed 3 deer with it and all were heart lung,bow type shots and none went over a couple leaps,55 gr Rem PSP bullet

The coyotes are definatly in trouble. I found a full box of 60gr v-max bullets amongst the mess on my reloading bench.
