Looks more like a good predator bullet maybe coyote.
Has anyone ever shot a Deer with a .223?

Shot placement is a must, but very effective on deer my daughters have killed more then 10 deer none traveled more then 50 yds some dropped in their tracks. Don't get a lot of blood on the ground from the small bullet hole. My oldest is 11 now and has been using a 243 for two seasons. 243 does hit the deer a lot hard.
 
Shot two deer last year with my .223 62grain hornady, 1 at 80yards and 1 at 200yards both dropped in the tracks. SHOT PLACEMENT, SHOT PLACEMENT, SHOT PLACEMENT..
 
My kids have killed several bucks with my Bushmaster AR-15, .223. The first few were with 45 grain hollow points that worked well. The last few were shot with 77-grain hollow points. That round is deadly. During the skinning and butchering process, I have found wounds on a couple that I could not explain. The bullet just blows up and does all sorts of damage. On one buck, a shot through the shoulder produced an entry and exit wound accross from it, but another fragment broke off, went through the gut into the hindquarter and broke the buck's femur.

In the photo, the doe with her head pointed up looks like she has a white patch on her throat. That is actually where she ran into a 2" tree so hard it stripped all the fur off down to bare skin. She was dead on her feet within a couple steps.

I took an ill-advised shot at the third doe while she was running and hit her through the hams. I found her about 150 yards away piled up in a creek. While I always try to make the best shot I can, and truly regret when I don't, I'm not sure that the .223 is as unforgiving of marginal shots as it has a reputation for being.

That AR is now my go-to gun when I'm looking to fill the freezer during gun season.
 
My nephew has 4 kills with a .223 using 60gr nosler partions out of a 16 inch barreled mini-14. One was a neck shot that dropped in its tracks. The other three were double lung shots and the deer went 20 to 50 yards and piled up. As a note we won't let him take shots with the .223 past 100 yards on deer, if we hunt a place were he can shoot a good distance he uses a .243, He's getting kinda beefy this year and he's been praticing with a .308
 
Out of the 100 plus deer I have killed..the most damage I have ever seen was from a .223.. a doe I shot at about 20 yards..

Were you using a hollowpoint or some type of varmint round?
 
IMO, .223 is not adequate for deer sized game. I liked the .243 minimum personally. Legal doesn't = ethical. I have a Bushmaster M4 chambered in .223 for patrol and home defense. I'd be looking to buy an AR-10 or an AR chambered in the new .300 AAC Blackout or .300 Whisper if I were looking to hunt deer. If my 30-06 went south on me I'd pick up the .50 caliber muzzleloader rather than the M-4. Don't get me wrong, I love my .223 Bushmaster, just not for hunting.

We are talking about dead deer riding home in the pickup after being killed with a .223-so it is certainly adequate. Shot placement is key with any round. The only drawback that I find with small caliber bullets is that there is not much of a blood trail 'if' they run. We haven't had one run out of sight or runoff after a heart/lung hit and have had several bamflops. PH

Are you basing your opinion on personal experience with the .223 on deer? Just wondering why you think it is unethical.

I honestly dont remember what round I was using..lol..
 
Thanks, I probably will stick with my 7mm but was wondering because .223 ammo is cheaper and thaught I might try out my Bushmaster at some point.
The Big Game .223 ammo is still a pretty penny but half of what my 7MM ammo costs.
