223 9 twist 80 gr Berger VLD

I shot up 20 of my AR loads that was Virgin WW brass while breaking in and lining up the CZ Varmint.

I loaded those 20 with the 80 gr Berger VLD and 24 grs Varget,all 4 five shot groups were less than an inch ,no real one hole groups but they were all pretty good clusters around .750-.800 groups,

while I was hoping for a little better it falls within what I am wanting to do,,which is to shoot MOA to 600 yards with the 223,

I think I will back up to 300 and see if it falls apart or gets better before wasting any more of these bullets,,I was kinda surprised they all hit the target nose first much less actually grouping pretty decent,
if they would hold that .750 to 600 I would be tickled sure enough,,but we will see,,

I am no expert by any means, but isn't an 80 gr bullet too heavy for a 1 in 9 twist?

Berger recommends an eight but some nines will spin them,if you get them going,,

shot my last bit of Varget so I will have to wait till next week for further tests but they look to be still flying straight at 300 yards,

the group I did shoot at 300 was a lot better MOA wise than any of the ones I shot at 100,,

A 75 gr AMax should work well.

yeah,,I plan on trying the 75 AMax soon,,I just had these Bergers and thought I would try them,,they cost way to much for what I want to do also,but with a BC of .471 it is nce to know I can use them if need be.

my original plan included the 75 AMax ,but I may try the 80 AMax just for kicks and giggles,

for what I am gonna be doing I will trade fps for higher BC all day .

neither really,,I am trying to hone my longer range wind reading ability,,

with a range finder I can get very close on elevation,the purpose to this madness is to learn to shoot through conditions and make a shot any time,not just when everything is perfect.

gonna try to ring the gong at 650 tomorrow,,by my charts it will take about 18 MOA to get there,,a 10 mph wind will take 6 MOA,,


if I can hit a 6.5 inch dot painted on the gong at 650 first shot I will be extatic.

AMax are too long to load for an AR. Hornady 75gr HPBT Match and 23.5 of Winchester 748 are my accuracy load in my 1 in 9.

Agreed. Shoot 62 grain or 55 grain instead. 1 in nine is toofast and will not patern well. It sounds like you know what you are doing, you just have to figure what the bullet wants to do. Try different brands, load your own and tweak it a little to get the best group you can.

depends on the rifle. i shoot 75g hpbt in .38" five shot groups in my savage about the same it does the 55gr pills. mr big said his rifle was more like a 8.5" twist anyways.

I changed to a 4.5-14 scope and was zeroing it in,,the worst of the 3 3 shot groups was well under 1/2 inch..the first three looked more like a 30 caliber hole.
I sure hope the 75 AMax does as well..

My brother has a 10 twist Bill Wilson that drives nails with 69 Sierra and 70 gr Berger bullets,,

Awesome!!! Many custom actions with custom barrels and 40x target scopes can't do that. I can't wait to see how that rifle shoots when you find your "perfect" combination.

that may be the perfect combo,,the 75 AMax went around 3/4 with Varget and I shot some 69 Sierras I had loaded for the R15 that was just under an inch,,

I am gonna try some more with the 75 AMax but the 80 Berger has done made an impression on me,,and at a BC of .470 at 2800 fps would really fill the bill as what I want to do.
