Can you fire .22 rat shot loads out of any .22 fire arm in good working condition?

Any negatives to shooting the stuff?

Seem to work better in a pistol than rifle, probably because the rifling messes up the pattern and there's more of it in a rifle. My brother has a Marlin .22 magnum "garden gun" that's smoothbore like a shotgun and that thing is deadly accurate with ratshot, but you can't shoot regular ammo in it. He kills coons in his chicken coop with it.
 
Won't cycle well in semi-autos. Other than that what Hogbear said is right. The longer the rifled barrel the suckier it gets. Out of a pistol they're varmint killers. Snakes and rats don't stand a chance.

I shoot rat shot out of my .38 as a snake gun on the farm. Deadly.

Haha, I didn't want to mention it because I thought people would think I was crazy but I do that more than I'm willing to admit. Hitting a field rat at a full gallop while in 3rd gear on a tractor can be fun.
 
They cycle well out of my Marlin model 60.I go back to the barn and shoot wood bee's with them. Very fun!

:D I've tried that before while bush hogging on the 4 wheeler. I never could get the pistol out quick enough though.
 
Haha I remember being a little kid and my grandfather would give me the single shot .410 and a box of shells to shoot rats while he bush hogged.
 
There's a big white cat with black spots that hears my tractor and comes over to follow me around and catch rats. I don't know who he belongs to but he's pretty smart.
 
I used a Browning buck mark pistol to shoot a large rat-snake that was coiled inside of my neighbor's fireplace at a distance of about 7 feet with some .22 shot loads that had the brass crimped over the shot instead of the little blue plastic capsules...ruined that snakes head. Had a few pellets bounce off me but not hard enough to hurt. No damage to the nice lady's furniture either
