Wanting a 22 automatic to plink around with. Will a 22 Mag shoot 22 LR shells, so i can coyote and target shoot with it?

Yep your right. Googled it and got a Big Definitely Not out of it. Looking for something cheap to target shoot and legal on WMA for coyotes.

Just get a .22lr semiauto- not ideal but it will kill a coyote. A magnum is better but no great shakes-I had one run off with a .22 mag hit last week. I hate not being able to use a decent round for coyotes during archery/mzl.

It is my understanding that a .22 Mag and a .22 LR are actually not the same diameter. Not saying you can't fire a LR out of a Mag, but if I'm not mistaken a Mag is like .222 and a LR is like .221.
Like NHill, I'd go with a legal, heavy shotgun load.

If your going to get a 22 mag then go with Hornady's Critical Defense ammo.

It's made for small guns as a self defence round but will do great in a rifle.

At the muzzle of a 1 7/8 inch barrel it shoots at 1000fps

At the muzzle of a 24 inch barrel it shoots out at 1700 fps.

The bullet itself is made to cut though heavy clothing and will not plug up on a coyotes hair.

They are high but worth every dime. I've never had a round like them.

I just got a 22 mag. for shooting coyotes, since their is no centerfire allowed where i hunt. For me a shotgun is for birds,JMO. I have taken it out squirrel hunting a couple of time now and there is a huge difference between a 22lr and the mag. Place a decent shot on a coyote and it will be over i am thinking. One of the squirrels i shoot blew off both front arms. Another blew the head clear off! These were fox squirrels as well. I am very pleased with it and will be doing some coyote hunting with it this year and report back on the adventure.

Ohhhh. You must have never seen a shotgun with a nice load of dead coyote and a good choke tube!!! It will do more damage @70 yards in than that mag will do.

I think the next long gun I buy will be a 3.5" 12 gauge so that I can set it up with a hevi-shot choke tube and dead coyote shells. It's secondary purpose would be for turkeys.
