22 mag barrel question

Looking to buy a 22 mag barrel for one of my CZs. Would you go with 20" heavy barrel, or 24" sporter barrel? Rifle is used for hunting. Would 22mag benefit from 4 more inches of barrel? Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Twist is very slow-the standard is (I believe) 1 in 16. Still, I think any additional length would help accuracy but that thinking is being proven wrong all over the place.

I would go with the sporter barrel and heaviest weight bullet I could find. I am fairly sure this thinking will be contested by those with real world results.

Good ? , and I am not sure, I have a marlin 22 mag, its a heavy barrel fairly long and I can free hand it a lot better than I can my heavy barrel 22, it being front end heavy makes me more steadier for some reason, I prefer a front end heavy rifle now if I had a choice. with several brands I was getting less than 1" at 100y, learned to not shoot squirrels so far away with it and my 17HMR , was loosing some trying to kill multiple from the same setting, got tired of walking back to look at which tree I shot 1 out of and loosing track of which tree.

I am not sure about mags in 22 but a regular 22 long rifle loses velocity with longer barrels because of simple friction. I think 18" is about ideal for plain 22s. Plus shorter barrels tend to be stiffer and that helps accuracy.

IMO there really isn't any beneficial gain in velocity at all from the longer barrel for most ammo.
Some ammo may increase by a few FPS while others may decrease by even more FPS.

The other benefits of a shorter, heavier barrel probably outweigh the sporter barrel too.

That's some interesting data. Judging from it, the shorter barrel would be better.

Looks like its dependent on which ammo you shoot, I would bet the different rifles will make the biggest difference . I go for accuracy over speed on all my rifles so there is that to think about

Not a 22wmr but my CZ 452 UL 22lr with 28 1/2 inch bbl is more accurate than my American with 22 inch bbl.

I think at one time or another, I've had most versions of the 452. One of the most accurate was a 16" threaded barrel American. I'm thinking it's going to come down to "it depends". Although I've never owned an inaccurate CZ Rimfire, some do better than others. I went ahead and ordered the 20" heavy barrel. I will update how it does when it gets here.
