I have been looking around at getting one of the newer .22s out on the market today. So I spent the evening looking at rifles. I was settled on getting a CZ-455 based on reviews. Until I held one. For the life of me I can't see or feel $400 worth of gun there. They might be the most popular on the forums but there's no difference in visual quality or feel with it than the others. Today I held and worked several guns and liked the Savage MKII series better than anything I handled. I was looking back and forth between it and the Marlin XT-22 series and every one of those Marlins I picked up, I could find quality blemishes in the stock (molding issues) or RUST on the barrel, etc. I swear my 1980 something Marlin 25N is in better shape than some of those new XTs were on the shelf. LOL

I didn't know anything about the Savage guns so I thought I had better research them before I jumped into one. Any thoughts on them?

There were a couple of Savage .17 HMRs I liked too. I had one a couple years ago but I sold it because all I could find the .17s in were in heavy barrel models. It looks like they have them in standard barrels now...that may be an alternative option I look into.
 
I've got a Savage FV-SR that's a nice plinker. Short barrel and suppressor ready if that floats your boat.

I held one just like it today and it got the wheels turning in my mind that the suppressor thing might be a fun route to go one of these days.
 
i have the savage and i love it .at 50 yards it will hit dimes all day with rem ammo .it is a little picky about ammo but even the worse ammo it shoots good .has a great trigger .its a tree rats nightmare and a few other critters

That's what I was hoping to hear. I did some research and reading on some of the rimfire forums last night and there are many other people that say similar things about them.

I don't have access to a CZ to shoot; it would have to be pretty darn impressive on that end of things to overlook the cheap look/feel for the price range they are in. The ones I handled were the 455 American with 20.5 inch barrel; walnut stock and blued barrel. I thought maybe it was a fluke but the one on the rack beside it was the same way. Maybe the 455 is their lower quality? The price sure wasn't low quality price, lol. I know on the forums, everybody seems to covet the 452 model. I've not handled a 452 so maybe the newer 455s aren't as good of quality? Maybe similar to the Marlin guns. I have a Marlin Model 781 .22 LR from the 1980s that looked and felt better than any of the new Marlins I looked at yesterday and I mean by a long shot.
 
Ive got a 452 American and a 452 Scout both in 22 and a 527 in 22Hornet. CZ's IMO are about the best quality you can buy for the money, however I have not handled the 455. Whitakers had 452's for under $400 last summer. CZ has been rumored to have stop making the 452 for the past few years now although they still have been showing up in batches always advertised as the "last ones".

X2 I have had several CZs and a Savage 17hmr. While the savage shot great, for and finish of the CZ is worth the price difference to me. Btw, my 22 is the 452 model.

I have a 452 and I really like it a lot. It flat out shoots. Target below is 6 shots at 50 yards.

That being said, I have owned a Savage Mark II with accu-trigger that was a shooter as well. It was extremely accurate but i HATED the synthetic stock on it. I ended up spending another $130 on a stock from Boyds. If I had to pick one, it would be the CZ hands down. The fit and finish and accuracy is exceptional for the price.

Both of my 452's are the cats meow. They shoot better than they should at their price point.

The weak spot on the savage is the plastic stock but Boyd's has several really nice stocks I'm eyeing.
 
If you want a shooter Ive got a Romanian Surplus M69 22 trainer with open sights that will put them through the same hole at 20yds. I have no doubt that this $100 gun would out shoot my $400 452 American with all things being equal, and probably any of my other dozen 22 rifles. My M69 looks mass produced and feels cheap. My 452 looks like a highly crafted and quality built gun. Point being, I believe luck of the draw has a lot to do with seperating the perfect from the nearly perfect when it comes to the accuracy of a 22 rifle.

Is this an offer to sell your m69? If so I call dibs. Cousins and I used to share one when I was a kid but I don't know where it went.

I went and looked at some more gun stores Saturday. I actually had one place tell me that the Savage MKii FV-SR was discontinued and they couldn't get any more of them. I went to another shop and they were really friendly there and talked to me a bit. They didn't have much in stock but said they could order anything I wanted. I had them check on the Savage and they aren't discontinued at all, and their supplier had several in stock. I asked how much and couldn't turn it down for the price. They were $100 cheaper than the first shop I was at Friday. Should be here by the end of this week. Already ordered an OD Green Boyd's stock for it too. I should have a tree rat killin' machine with it. Have a BSA Sweet 22 sitting here in the box waiting on it.

I may go back and have them order a CZ 452. They said they could still get them and told me the price...was under 4 bills. I would have had them order me one today but they did tell me their distributor/supplier was out of stock, and that it could be a while before it came in. I dunno...will see how good the Savage shoots first. It may be all I need and then some.

Congrats on the new .22, I imagine it will be a great shooter. Just a heads up on the Savage. Check into the bottom metal situation if the one you bought is a plastic stock. I am not sure if it is still the situation but a few years back when I bought mine, I had to buy the b0ttom metal to fit the Boyd's stock as the plastic stock had a molded trigger guard.
 
TnRifleman -- You are correct. It is still the same way with the plastic stock. I got my Boyds stock from the DIP company that had the stocks and metal parts in it as a drop in/upgrade kit. I like the DIP products; have had their stuff on an AR that I had, and a .308. In fact, this Savage .22 is going to end up looking like a .308 I built several years back. I never got to shoot it much due to shells getting scarce, so I sold it. I should get to shoot this one a bunch.
 
Check out Buds Gun Shop on the 452 also. The store in Sevierville had one not too long back.
 
Can't speak for the CZ, but I have one of the savage bolt guns.... it's deadly accurate. My son and I exterminated quite a few squirrels from my neighbor's yard with the rem 22 subsonic ammo yesterday in our subdivision. Darn critters have chewed up $400 worth of coax cable and have destroyed the plastic bumper on his truck. Neighbors won't even know :)... squirrel dumplings tomorrow night :)

I'm anxious to get mine in and tuned up. I deer hunted Saturday evening and at one point, had 13 squirrels within 50 yards of me that I could see. One tree had 4 in it that must have been rutting...making all kind of noise. The next lil ridge over had a bunch on it too...I could hear them cutting acorns and walking. They need thinned out. Nobody has hunted them on our property for right at 20 years.
 
The rifle came in today. I went and picked it up and the first thing I did was put the Boyd's stock on it. Then I mounted the scope on it....BSA Sweet .22 in 2-7x32. Grabbed some cheap Remington 40 grain gold tip shells and out the door I went to set the scope. Our sand bags had dry rotted in the shed; when I picked them up they ripped. So I didn't have any bags to shoot off of. I improvised and used a milk crate at the bench. Rifle sighted in very easy but I did get some fliers with the cheap ammo. I had a good 50 yard group going that I could have covered with a dime and then one shot went 2 inches low and to the left. Better ammo will take care of the fliers.

My only complaint...the bull barrel coupled with new stock = nose heavy and this is without a suppressor on it. If I use shooting sticks in the woods or brace off a tree, this shouldn't be a problem at all but shooting off handed at distance might not be good.
 
I got a fv-93 couple years ago .17 mag,heavy bull bbl. cured nose heavy with rolled pennies in stock screw hole,off bags it will punch the rivet out of a can pop top 25-50 yds. ,got a 22 mag black friday fluted heavy bbl accu-triggers are sweet!!!
