Deer ARE a "crop;" a renewable resource with an excess that can/must be removed every year. Although I generally already do, in the future I'll make SURE to use the word "harvest." Anything to piss you all off! ;)

I see how much time, money, and effort some people put into managing their property; and I sometimes wonder if they don't treat deer as more of a crop and less as a wild animal.

As for what we call it, it doesn't really matter to me, so I'll now withdraw myself from this conversation.

Still not sure why but Harvest really bothers me. It sounds to planned out or something. But I guess this is where hunting is going. You pick out a yearling.Plant food to feed him. Watch him over several years until he is mature then you shoot him. So now that I think about it those type of hunters are harvesting a deer. Its not what I do but more power to ya.

Me either, I will continue to Kill Deer as long as the good Lord allows it! I could care less what anybody else calls it!

Shouldn't biologically sound wildlife management, including appropriate harvest/kill numbers, be planned out? If you don't have a plan, you're just exploiting and not managing.
 
Then we should just use the term slaughter then. ;) Raise'em and bring'em to the slaughter. Still think I'm sticking with selection tho. :grin:
 
Some family of mine like to throw in another key word to try and rile... "innocent"

Funny all the cows, chickens, turkeys, and pigs they eat aren't so innocent :confused:
 
I love to harvest deer. Did I say harvest? Harvesting deer is a great thing. Harvesting is more humane than killing them. Harvesting deer is politically correct. Harvesting deer is practicing sound QDMA.

and for those that that can't stand it,

What if you harvest corn, dump it out then kill a deer over it? Is that considered doubling cropping? Wonder if my insurance will cover it...
 
I cannot remember ever (other than this post) using harvest related to "cultivating" a deer herd. I see nothing wrong with it though.
 
I killed some corn poured it out and harvested a deer while it was grazing upon it.... There... Now top that one. BTW it was a cull doe..
 
I use the were "shot"..... i shot a doe.or i shot a buck or i shot a deer.....after shooting deer usually dies thus i killed it....once i find it i collect/harvest my prize and happy all the same.....
 
I enjoy answering the non hunter when they ask if I CAUGHT any deer this year. I like to say that I caught a couple bucks but released them to grow up after they ground shrunk on me. :)
