Took my 4 year old hunting this evening, got to see several does and then about 15 mins till shooting light ended, this young buck was chasing some of the does till he found out they weren't ready yet. Ended up strolling by us around 25 yards. Ended the night with the first deer kill while with my boy. The cherry on top was after he got to see the deer up close he yelled "THAT'S MY DADDY!" Bout made me melt right there lol

Sorry for the late post, but this is my daughter with the buck she named Ghost. We had been on his trail since the beginning of the 2024 season, but we could never establish a solid travel routine for him, and he was never where we thought he would be based on scouting, which is why she gave him that name. (Granted we are both fairly new at hunting, so we might have been reading the signs wrong. Still learning something new on every trip to the woods!) HOWEVER :) We kept on his trail over the summer, and she was able to close the deal on him on the first day of the 2025 velvet season back in August.
The unfortunate part was, that despite a perfect double-lung shot, he ran over 500 yards before he laid down, and he had gotten into some really thick stuff. We weren't able to find him until the next morning because we some weather come and push us out of the woods. It rained hard overnight, and the blood trail was completely gone. We were honestly lucky to have even found him. We followed the advice of my Father-in-Law, who told us that deer like to die low and near to water. So, we flanked the nearby creek bed on either side and eventually stumbled upon him.
He's with the taxidermist now and they said they were going to do everything they could to save the velvet, but gave no promises, which is completely understandable. It was still very warm (as some of you may remember well) and since he sat out overnight, there was no hope of harvesting the meat. Which I absolutely hate, but it happens sometimes.
We didn't even take the time to measure him. We snapped this picture really quick and carried him out of the woods as fast as possible. Spending time with my daughter in the woods is by far the most important thing to me, but I am very curious to see what he scores. I couldn't even get my hands around the bases of his antlers.
Very proud of her, and I was just happy I could be there to experience it with her!

KY juvi season runs a week long this year so my buddy from Arkansas and his daughter decided to drive in today to hunt for a couple days. She passed up a nice 8 which would've been her biggest and then this one stepped out a little while later. Goes to show that cams don't pick up everything because I haven't seen this deer at all. Got 7" and 5" bases. It's an awesome buck.
