2021 Deer Season

Hey Guys, I just received the wildlife calendar that is sent to holders of Sportsman License. Since I can remember, opening Archery has always been the last Saturday in September; Muzzleloader the first or second Saturday in November; and the biggest weekend of the year, opening Gun the Saturday before Thanksgiving.

Fast forward to 2021 hunting season...according the dates in the calendar provided, opening Archery remains the last Saturday in September. However, opening muzzleloader is MONDAY November 8 and Gun is Sunday, November 21, 2021. Are you kidding me? Now, I'm retired, not that big of deal. But for you working guys and gals they (TWRA) have essentially screwed you out of two opening weekends. Especially, OPENING GUN weekend.

For those of you that have a calendar would you please review? Thanks.

Same number of deer will get killed regardless of season dates. There's a finite resource out there. You could start ML Dec 1st and gun Dec 15th and kill would only decline a tad.

And if a few extra deer survive the orange army to enjoy another year of life, is that a bad thing?

It is in fact November 7, 2020. I'm speaking of November 2021. It is clearly stated in the wildlife calendar they sent out.

I was not speaking of the number of days to hunt. Furthermore, I sure as heck was not speaking of deer kills. Where in the wide world of sports did that come from? DUH! Do you work for the TWRA? I'm talking about the opportunity to hunt two opening weekends that have or will be eliminated. My apologies if I did not make myself clear. Essentially, everyone I knew while I was working on the railroad and others ALWAYS hunted opening weekends. And...after Thanksgiving weekend...in a lot of cases they were done for the year. In most cases, if you work, that is your only opportunity unless of course you have vacation; personal leave or sick days. Most would leave on Friday and hunt Saturday and Sunday.

I don't know what the calendar says, but this is the proclamation, which is the law for the next 2 years.

Yeah it is the same dates every year. If the calendar is wrong, it is likely a misprint. It hasn't changed that I can think of since we went to the season structure we have now. Gun is always the Saturday before TG, ML is two Saturdays before that. Archery is always the 4th Saturday in Sept. NOT the last Saturday. There will be years that Archery opens Sept 22nd or 23rd, and of course in those cases there is another Saturday in Sept.

Don't get overly excited about dates on a calendar. Read the proclamation.

The calendar I received last week has the 7th and 21st for the dates. Maybe some are misprints? idk. Screenshot and send to TWRA.

Permanent opening dates:

Archery - fourth Saturday in September.
Muzzleloader - third Saturday before thanksgiving
Rifle - Saturday before thanksgiving

It's been like this as long as I've been hunting which is about 9 or 10 years and I don't think they are changing it for 2021.

I also received my calendar, and the dates are in fact what you say for the 2021 deer mz and gun. As others have stated, I wouldn't put to much concern into the calendar. Although I can see the frustration you are talking about with the working men not having as much opportunity. I myself have been blessed with a job in the past where I'm able to hunt when I want but know a lot of weekend warriors that hunt hard to only get the leftovers of the ones that have already been there. Deer hunting is hard enough as is, especially on public ground. Ghost deer are even harder to kill.

Unfortunately, it has been pretty common for them to get dates wrong on the calendar. It has zero legal basis. As Buzz stated, the legal dates are found in the Proclamations: https://tnsos.org/rules/WildlifeProclamations.php
