It started out horrible as I hunted all bow season and could not even see a shooter and this also was the worst Muzzle Loader Season for me in 10 years. I have been on a shooter ever MZ season during that time and have either taken a nice buck or blown the opportunity. This dry weather and hot on top of that was just not conducive to good buck movement. Opening day changed that as I chose a stand in transition where bucks like to cruise, then 10 days later on tueday 29th I had planned to go to a spot I had not hunted in years and I just had a feeling about that spot from scouting but upon checking with a friend he was planning on hunting very near there that same morning so I switched to plan B. I set up on cutover bordering our lease of almost 700 acres on management area and just knew there could be does and bucks hiding in that cover and I started seeing does and fawns together but then about an hour later a doe and a fawn came running by me and I was hoping to see a buck tagging along but I was actually witnessing the doe separating herself from her fawn and about a half hour later I witnessed the fawn come back by itself and circle around trying to come in behind its mother and follow it parallel to the ridge she had went down. in the meantime I had a young small racked buck walk right up to me calling it and busted me as the wind hit its nose at 15 yards from the stand and it bolted back into the cutover and disappeared. before another 30 or so minutes passed I heard brush breaking off to my left and on our side of the lease and a grunt. I immediately recognized it was following the trails of the two does and grabbed my gun and slipped the safety off and waited. The buck came in to view and even though it was in thick brush I could tell it was probably at least an 8, he followed her zigged zagged trail and as it got within 15 yards he turned and faced my direction so rather than taking a iffy shot I waited on him to clear the brush and enter the head high sedge brush and I let him have it with the 270WSM and he dropped right there on the spot 35 yards directily in front of my stand. The second buck has 5+ inch bases and weighed just under 200#s and was a 4.5 year old while the other buck was a 3.5 year old and proud to take them both. Love this sport. What an awesome 10 days of gun season after a disastrous 7 weeks of bow and MZ season. And that is how the Rut can change your hunting fortune in a heart beat! Blessed and Thankful!
