on the wings of a snow white dove
its dead on burn down time, for either conventional planting or no till

I am going again with the conventional method and tear up the ground with disc then the do-all

anyways to make the disking easier this year I was advised by many local farmer to "burn down all fields with a mixture of Roundup and Rifle"

the roundup alone will just not kill all the weeds this day and time, this is why the Rifle Herbicide was added

32 ounces of generic Roundup and 8 ounces of Rifle in 10 gallons of water per acre, in 7-10 days all fields will look like Japan at the end of WWII

start clean and try to stay clean

Bush hogging after it all dies will make it even easier to disc up. It's hard to cut up tall stuff that gets all wrapped around the disc. I've tried enough times to shortcut that step to know. :)

my 5 fields totaling about 28 acres has nothing over 2-3 inches tall, bush hog is not needed

When are you planting. What preemerge and rate do you use at planting?

Thanks.

24 ounces of Treflan in 10 gallons of water was incorporated into the soil on April 11-12 -- this is per acre

at planting time I will spray out the back of the planter 4 ounces of Spartan Herbicide in 10 gallons of water - - this is per acre
if any grasses/weeds are visible at planting time I will add Gramaxone to the tank also, insecticide is used at every planting

after plants are about 2 inches tall I will spray over the top of all fields 24 ounces of Dual in 10 gallons of water per acre.

I will plant fields on April 20 if soil temperature at 4 inches deep is above 55 degrees, and no rain in the forecast

at some point I will run the "hooded spray rig" down all the rows of plants applying 42 ounces of Gramaxone in 10 gallons of water, this will help a ton to keep the middle of the rows clean

24 ounces of Treflan in 10 gallons of water [per acre] incorporated into the soil on all dove fields on April 11-12, it was 2 long days on a tractor due to travel time from field to field

40.5 acres of sunflowers planted Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday

Peredovic seed used
5.8 inch seed spacing
4 ounces Spartan Herbicide per acre
32 ounces Gramaxone per acre
2 ounces insecticide per acre

I will go back just before the next rain and spray 16 ounces of "Duel" over the top

That Spartan is little high! bought a gallon @ 500. Good thing is I'll have half gal left over to spray
Next year

Chaneylake, what's your final cost per acre on your sunflower plots?

Finished up a bag of Clearfield seed that I had this year, but may try your plan next season. Thanks for the wealth of info.

I have not paid for any of the seed, chemicals and fertilizer yet

I will probably pay for everything in the next few days, I will then figure up the cost and post the results
