Worst work day today after an already long string of bad work days and I just selected the 2010 from my Stagg collection to drown my sorrows. I must say, Pappy has nothing on Stagg in my hazy opinion. i managed to procure a massive snort of 23 yr pappy this past weekend and while I will never turn it down, it will never be my first choice. I'll be crossed eyed soon enough.....
 
I have yet to try a Van Winkle, but I've had the pleasure of Stagg. Actually gave a bottle to some friends of ours for letting us spend an extended weekend with them in the lowcountry. With a small splash of water, it is amazing. We tried it neat one night and quickly found the bottled water. I still have one bottle left. This Christmas I will probably open my bottle of Lot B Van Winkle. Really looking forward to trying it.
 
I do think it takes a lot of repetitive drinking of higher proof spirits before you palate can enjoy them without a small water cut. Stagg is extremely complex and can easily be too much without the help of some h20. That is not a dig at anyone's likker tolerance but rather just an observation. It took me a long time before I could honestly say I enjoyed high proofs neat and I do not always drink them neat despite what the snobs might say. Snobs are just that, snobs! :)
 
105-110 proof is my tolerance level. Right now I'm waiting on Four Roses small batch limited edition to make it my way. If it doesn't, I may go with single barrel limited edition.

Going to be watching the next few weeks as Winkle will hit the shelves. Around here that's a joke, as I only know of two stores where it is actually put on the shelf for public sale.
 
This thread makes me think about opening the bottle of 2007 Larue Weller I've been sitting on. That year it was in the 115 or so proof area.

Looking forward to the cooler weather. I've got one beer left from a variety six-pack of octoberfest my wife picked up for me at Publix. Then it's bourbon time again. My wife bought a pair a shoes the other day, $75. That means I've got $75 to spend. Crazy how the limited edition of 4 roses I saw the other day was $74.99.
