Smokeless 200yd's +

I will admit I haven't done as much shooting the Savage as much as I should but hope to remedy that soon. I want to do some at 200yd"s plus. My question what bullet, powder, (how many grains) do I need to try for 200 plus?

I will be doing a lot of testing at the range & the farthest board is set at about 225y. 240g cheap shots with 41g of VN110.when I have that dialed in I will ck the 240g xtp. then the 250g .will also shoot the 250g & 300g sst & will adjust powder to see what velocity & drop to set my Nikon scope dope. most of my hunting shots are less than 100y but like to know what the rifle is capable of.

Once you find a load that works great in your rifle at 100 yrds, 200 yrds is more than doable with the Savages WITH practice. The faster you push a heavier bullet the better retained energy you'll have and less trajectory issues you'll have to deal with but it's not going to be nice to your shoulder.

My Savage's load was a 300 gr. Barnes Original in an orange MMP sabot on top of H4198 (quite a bit of it). Shot good at 100 and did pretty well at 200 but she was brutal on the shoulder. To help offset the trajectory issues I sighted in at 150, which put me a little high at 100 and a little low at 200.

Duck I haven't shot it since last fall. I am still in the playing mode. The loads I have tried where what is in the owners manual. I never was happy with any of them.

My Savage holds up well with 60gr N120 and 300gr BO...2" high at 100yd, 2" low at 234yds, which is as far as I have shot it.

Not to dampen your spirits but middle of summer isn't the time to be working up a load in a smokeless ML. If you aren't already a member on Doug's message board http://dougsmessageboards.proboards.com ... zleloading sign up and read some of the stickies and look at the load data that's available and look into building a cooling rod. It'll help offset some of the summer temps.

Im hoping I can get a 200y load worked up for my 50 cal with 240g or 250g xtp. If not I have the faith a 250g sst pushed by smokeless will expand good, I have seen that they don't with other less powders lol

the 250 sst expands a little too well at smokeless speeds, the 300 is a better deer bullet

Duck you can't dampen me. I like to shoot just haven't done as much as I should with the Savage. I have been to Doug"s a few times and get so lost in it I usually just give up. I have a rod for cooling and let any gun cool before shooting again, I just take more than one gun.

I might make a cooling rod but as a rule 2-3 other rifles go with me & I get in no hurry to warm up the big bore rifles. 22's have wasted more of my time over the years than any other but this savage might take their place lol. Thanks for the info on the sst's

Mike243 I finely got out today and shot 44.4grs of N110 and a 250gr SST. I had 3 touching out of 5 at 100yrds the other two was very close. I want to try it at 200yrd next and use the crony. to see what it is doing. I think I may be on to something.

wow that's pretty hot,im thinking 1 of the dippers I was using was close to that.july 1st starts the new year for the range so I will prob go july 4th & buy my yearly permit. got about 100 or so loads to shoot .will pu more when the wife aint looking lol

Its the Norris range.$40 for the year. $20 for a day.it closes for a week for a bow hunt & a week for a shotgun hunt.you have a key & can come & go as you like.your kids are free & the wife gets a discount.my grandkids also get free.has 2 pistol ranges/boards now

I haven't been to Norris in years, it's nice but seems to fill up fast and I'm not into waiting for a bench.

Think I'm going to check out Oak Ridge Sportsman's Club this year, big area wife and kids free, and I work in OR.

I try to get there at day lite most times before it gets crowded & the wind picks up,it wont bother my big rifles much but my 22's get affected at times

OK back on subject. I got out this morning at sun rise. I shot the same load I shot at 100yrds and did real good then. This morning I shot 200yrds. and did real bad out of five shots only two even hit a 12 in target. The load was 44.4gr of N110. At 100 I can have them touching and at 200 they must be going every where. I did get to use the crony and got 2342-V. I probably would never get a deer shot over 100yrds but I would like to do better.

10gr n110 under 50gr 4198 with black sabots and a 195 barnes shoots very good to 248 yards in my savage might be worth a try

I had shot the 100 early this week. Shooting across wheat stubble looked for the sabots but could not find them. They have been fine in the past. I am using black sabots I ordered for hi velocity.

I'd scrub the barrel. Just my opinion but any time load work is done with a smokeless ml, each and every sabot needs to be accounted for. 85+ degrees and a hot load can blow a sabot quick. And once its laid down its plastic fouling in the barrel, accuracy goes to pot.

Barrel gets scrubbing after every section and swapped with a solvent and dried after every shot.

Kroil and elbow grease.

Kroil makes no mention of being a plastic remover,I have been using a wire brush but haven't had any plastic fouling yet

Kroil does a fine job of cleaning. It seems to get under lead and softens plastics. I normally use it and Hoppies. That seems to clean a barrel up good.
