Want to take my daughter. I have a 20 gauge Remington with a jelly head choke in it. What kind of shells and what size shot do you all recommend? I have never hunted with a 20.
 
What kind of choke would you guys recommend for this gun and load?
 
Factory full usually is good out to 30yds or so with those shells but I'd shoot it to make sure. A true glo SSX is a good cheap option in the 870 that is known to work but you can shoot the jelly head and see how it does before buying another one.

If your daughter is strong enough to hold gun steady, I would consider an after market choke, but if you think she may be a little wobbly, I would go with factory full for more margin of error, and keep my shots to 30-35 yards.

Yes... she shot it yesterday about 20 yards out. Had a pretty good pattern. I will post pics of it later. Just didn't know what is recommended by the 20 gauge guys.
 
I'm curious about the choke for these federal mag shoks with the flight control wad. I've heard it's not recommended to use a ported choke tube...any truth to that? I hope I can get some of these before season!

Yes there is truth to that and it does have to do with the Flite Control wad that Federal uses in the shell. I believe the porting strips the wad and sprays the pattern but someone may know more about that than me. I've had good success with the Carlson's Extended Non-Ported choke in an Affinity 20ga and shooting the Fed Hvywt #7. Might be worth a look.
 
Also as a side note.....the pattern is impressive to say the least. I've only ever used a 12ga Remington 870 since I started turkey hunting 14 years ago; that will change this year after seeing how the 20ga patterns.
 
My daughter killed a bunch with magblends and an undertaker choke, but it was a Mossberg. It was a solid 40+ yard gun.

Get her a shooting stick.

That is true more so with the 12 gauge load than the 20 gauge load due to the wad being stiffer in the 12 gauge shell. The 20 gauge wad is more pliable and not affected as much by wad stripping or ported chokes. That's why the Truglo SSX choke patterns the 20 gauge load so well.
