2 Part Pine Tree Question

Happy New Year All.

1.) Is their any significant difference between Virginia Pine and Virginia Pine Christmas? I noticed the TN DOF is out of the regular Virginia Pine (which is what I wanted to match up with what I have done in the past, fill in gaps)and was thinking of ordering the Christmas if the appearance was virtually the same (to include height and coloring)

2.) Ideal time to plant pine trees? Have heard various things and wanted to see what you all thought.
 
I spoke with the Forestry division and they basically said the Christmas variety was a fuller seedling but the height, color, etc.. was the same between Virginia and Christmas Virginia.

Foggy, do you plan on days where a hard freeze is not expected or do you even pay attention to temperature?
 
Thanks Foggy. I'll get out and have some "backaches" for you. Always sore when I do it. But the satisfaction of seeing the results make it well worth it!

I guess I'm getting old and lazy. The one thing I've learned from planting pines is that I never want to do that again! :D

I'll pay someone else to do it!

It is definitely hard work. At least with all of the rain the holes will be easier to dig, he he. Although my back and butt will still hurt from all of the squats!
 
Try planting 6,000 in three days in a steep hillside clear-cut, with high winds, sleet and temps the whole time at 32-34 degrees. But we got great tree survival!

Don't know if you have a planter or not but I took the time to make my own "dibble bar" when I planted my sawtooths. That helped alot to save the ol back and saved plenty of time. Seems like my son and I done about 70 trees in 1 1/2 hours. I also planted right after a heavy rain and the soil was very wet and easy to push using your foot to go back into the roots. Hope this might help.
 
Thanks. I do have a dibble bar and it does make a big difference. The digging aint so bad. It is more of the squatting!

BSK, I can't imagine 6,000 in 3 days! I did 1,000 over a weekend with my brother and could not get out of bed on Monday.
 
Why on earth would you want to plant Virginia pines? Is it just that the soil is too poor to support any other kind? Virginia pines are pretty much the epitome of trash tree.....scrubby, ugly, poor timber tree, extremely suseptible to breaking under ice, no wildlife value that I'm aware of......can't think of anything good to say about them.

The saplings can be shaped for Christmas trees, but that's about it.
