I've heard several announcers mention that they can't say "2 minute warning". They have to say "2 minute timeout" or they could get in trouble. What's up with that?

Just because NCAA made a revision to the name to call it a two minute timeout instead of two minute warning. Not sure what they could get in trouble for besides calling it an old name.

Could ot possibly be NFL related somehow? They say 2 minute warning? Not sure why the NCAA can't.
I've just read more than I ever wanted to about this topic. The answer is the powers that be at the NCAA want to keep the college game as separate from the NFL as possible. Also, even in the NFL it's more of a timeout nowadays than a warning. When the 2 minute warning was established in the NFL it really was a warning that the half was about to end because there were no game clocks in the stadium. I don't think the announcers could actually get in trouble, but the NCAA folks must've strongly encouraged them to use timeout.

And yet the NCAA continues down the path to be like the NFL in similar every other avenue, NIL, Portal transfers, and the like.
