I'd say my dry spell is over. Tax season has kicked my tail so I got out opening afternoon and shot a doe. Didn't make it out again until today and shot a 5 pt buck. Never shot a buck in my life, always does. He walked out and stood there too long at 31 yds and I couldn't take it any longer. So after getting skunked for so many years I'm two sits and two deer this year. After I shot the buck, two doe came running up to him and I'm climbing down in my climber and get on the ground and could have shot both of them I think.

I lost my love affair with the Rage. That doe on opener was the first Rage I ever shot. Today he was barely quartering away, leg forward and I 12 ringed him. The arrow went in about broadhead deep and the arrow just fell on the ground. The deer just stood there like he was in shock. I had 2 Rage and 3 Thunderheads in the quiver so I pulled a Thunderhead out and shot less than 1/2" lower and it zipped right thru and he fell dead right there. Don't know what the deal was on the first with a Rage didn't even get a piece of the shoulder, it was a really good shot. When I picked the arrow up it was broken right behind the insert and barely hanging on by a few carbon fibers. The arrow wasn't damaged before the shot either, I'd checked it real good before nocking it.
 
Congrats on the deer, thats a weird incident with the Rage. I have heard enough bad of them not to use them but I've also heard enough good about them to know you had an unusual malfunction. Regardless those Thunderheads punch them pretty good. I have had some tough blood trails with the Thunderhead but they penetrate better than most. And they break a leg bone like it's nothing
 
The only reason I bought a pack of Rage was my Thunderheads did leave small blood trails. Most of the time, like today, they drop and die where I hit them. I've never lost a deer but had one or two I found with little to no blood. Thought I'd give a mech a try. Think I'm done with them.
 
I shot 3 blade rage a few years ago. Was in Iowa hunting and shot biggest buck of my life at about 30 yds. Thought I hit him good. Only one blade deployed. Still had great blood for about 1/2 mile. Layer down twice. Tracked him for 3 hours when blood started turning to little drops. Never found him. Killed a spike that same trip few days later at 10 yds. Still only one blade deployed but he ran 10 yards and fell over. My Iowa buddy turned me to hammerheads. Wicked awesome. Have killed 5 since then farthest going about 25 yards. I wrote rage. Never got a response.

I had such a dry spell there for a few years, I honestly don't know how to act. It's as if my psyche just got used to being skunked.
 
Congrats. I'm going to put a Nap spitfire on Catman's arrow so he can watch em fall. He will be ruined. Thunderheads will collect dust.

I agree mudbone. I would think the one thing you want in a broadhead is consistency. Also I've found that fewer moving parts the fewer problems. I think most would be better off with fixed blades. I put expandables in the same category as muzzleloader pellets. Not necessary and often detrimental.
 
Someone posted a similar story on AT a couple days ago. Shot 2 deer with rage. First one killed but broke at the insert. Second one went in a couple inches and came right back out and also broke the arrow.

I shot my first with a Magnus Thursday. Arrow was stuck in the ground several inches behind her. She only went 60 yards. I'm sticking with fixed heads.

You're the one who suggested Thunderheads to me years ago. Those and those 95g .243 rounds (Fusion I think) but I never gun hunt. LOL!

If I buy you a Fat Mo I'd have to sit and watch you eat. They won't let me have beef anymore. That's why getting at least 3 deer was so important to me this season. I was completely out of venison and we use a lot of hamburger meat. Alex is 15 and eats like a trash can and we love tacos. Turkey meat for tacos gets old quick!

My wife doesn't eat meat and Olivia is only 7 so she eats very little anyway but mainly chicken. I hate chicken.

That first doe gave me 4 wrapped backstraps, tenderloin and 25 bricks of hamburger with no beef fat added. Already went thru one backstrap and three bricks of burger.

That was me. You can see in my thread here "Monkey off my Back" the kill shot at 43 yds and the devastation the Rage caused. It was a complete passthru but when I picked up the arrow it was broke behind the insert and barely hanging and wound up breaking off. I chalked it up to the ground being so rocky. Standing boulders everywhere and nothing but cedars and hackberrys for trees, I bet there's not 2" of topsoil.

The buck this past Friday was 31 yds and the arrow was perfect. It hit the deer and made what looked to be a 2" or so gash in the hide and the deer kinda spun a bit and the arrow just fell out. He meandered just a bit and gave me another opportunity at 36 yds and I loaded an arrow with a Thunderhead and aimed at the existing wound. It was exactly where I wanted to hit him. If the Thunderhead didn't hit the exact same hole it couldn't have been 1/2" lower. Zipped right thru him and hit the ground and skipped into some standing boulders just outside a pond bank. That arrow didn't break but the Thunderhead was bent so bad I couldn't unscrew it from the arrow.

The first arrow with the Rage broke about 1 1/2" behind the insert. I got so much crap on AT I had to ask a mod to delete the thread. It was a brand new arrow I'd cut from a new pack the night before. The arrow thru the doe was one that had been thru all of 3D season. I just switched from Eastons to Victory VForce Gamers this year and when Gander was going out of business I bought out their stock. Had four boxes and the first two had real Blazer vanes and the last two had blank no names. Of course no returns. Started noticing arrows breaking just hitting a bag target and opened a new box yesterday and when I put it in the arrow saw it busted up.

I noticed that some of the arrows were bulged where the insert went in. They were the inserts that came with the arrows. I tossed the ones already built and the uncut ones still in the box. Bought a dozen Eastons last night.

To be fair, after further investigation it seemed to be an arrow problem not the Rage - with that being said will stick with Thunderheads and Montecs in the future.

Man. talk about a blessing - I've been stuck on a bad lease since 2012 with no deer sightings at all. I even made the decision last year to try public but waited until MZ season started and I only bow hunt. I really feel if I got out to public during archery only, I would have got one.

I went and checked all of my cameras at the lease on Thursday 9/21 and they were all no pics. Me putting them up and coming to check them and the occasional blank stare pic where a leaf blew by. I took them all down and looked at public spot on the way home. Saw 5 deer while looking around the public land.

Client calls me on Friday 9/22 and wants me to look at something before he signs and buys this land. We're out there at 4:30ish and deer come out everywhere. I made a comment about the next day being opener and he lives out of state mostly and says "Treat it like it's yours and shoot every deer here, this will be developed next year."

I still shoot the fusions both in .243 and .270. Love them. Even though you can't eat the beef I'd still let you buy me one and watch me eat it. Only a true friend would do that. :shock: :)
