1st build how does this work

I have made up my mind to build a 338 edge out of my Remington 700 7mm.I'm not a greenhorn when it comes to shooting or reloading but With this being the first gun I've ever built I don't know how this process works. When i choose which barrel I want do I need to contact the barrel maker and send them my barreled action and have them fit it to my action or do I order the barrel and have a gunsmith fit the barrel to the action.

You need to decide who you want to build it and give them a call. I used Short Action Customs to build my Remington 700. Most of your better smiths keep a few barrels in stock, and if they don't have one they can probably find one before you can get it. most of the major barrel manufacturers have a 6 to 8 month wait.

If you don't have the equipment and skills to do it yourself, you need to do a little more research. Decide which barrel you want. Some barrel manufacturers offer gunsmith services. If your choice does, get an estimate.

Check around for a reputable gunsmith with experience working on and rebarreling Remington rifles and get an estimate. Make sure to let him know the barrel manufacturer and barrel style and caliber.

.338 Edge is a tuff build...i helped a very good friend build one on a Savage 7MM RUM(remington Ulta Magnum)action. 28" MacGowan barrel with 1:10 Twist and DE Muzzel Brake(which is absolutly neccessary). Long Range Hunting and Defensive Edge websites are a wealth of information - do LOTS of reading and research. I will says this...it is an massive beast...i have shot it on several occasions...300gr SMK's at 2800fps slamming steel at 1500yards is a cake walk, but i would not want to haul it around the woods...its bout the same size and weight as a howitzer

The feed rails in a standard magnum 700 are not quite wide enough for the Ultra mag case. If you do not have an action from a factory Ultra mag you will need the rails opened up slightly. As far as the 2 barrels you are choosing between be thinking Krieger.

Timintn what do you think about hart barrels. Will.the gunsmith know barrel manufacturer know I will need the rails opened up or is this something . Will have to tell them

I have a strong preference for cut rifled barrels. Krieger being at the top along with Brux, and Bartlein. I also prefer the plain jane 4 groove over the newer 5 groove style. I have only tried 1 of the 5R`s from Bartlein and it copper fouled. I would go about things differently. I`d send the action to Greg Tannel, Gre/Tan Rifles for the action work only. He is amazing on 700 Remingtons. His full blueprint is $500.00, but you get a full blown custom quality action. Just skip the light weight firing pin all together. There is much to be said of the mass and impact of the fire control. Order your Krieger barrel, immediately as wait times are long, or see if Grizzly Machine has a Bartlein in stock that you can use, if you call Brux, Norm or Ken may answer the phone and let you know how long the turn time is. Find a very reputable smith to assemble the parts, they take longer than your local guy, but the end project will depend on the craftsmans hands who indexes/threads/crowns and chambers your barrel. Grizzly Machine also carries PT&G reamers in stock if the specs are something you like. If not I can highly recommend JGS Tool for a reamer. They are $200.00 not including a headspace gauge.

in a Rem 700 action I would opt for the shorter 338 Norma or the 338 RUM,,I shoot a 338 Lapua and unless you are gonna be shooting past a mile most of the time the 300 gr bullets at 2675-2725 or the 250`s at 2850-2900 will be plenty gun,,

I shot the Lapua last Saturday at Rockcastle at 1525 yards with the 250 Hornady BTHP Match with a mild load of H1000 at 2850fps and was on steel second shot and made solid hits 8 out of 10 shots.

Here's how you avaoid the barrel wait time. Go to www.bugholes.com look on page 5 of the barrels section. Brux M24 contour. Call a guy named tooter at meridith cusom rifles in north alabama at 256-614-2122. He learned from one of the best 1000yd rifle smiths in the country (Mashall Eddy). Tooter builds top quality rifles that will shoot. I have two of his long range guns and both have shot in the .000's. He can open the raceway for you on your action.
